England v Scotland 14th August

Four of my friends went down to the Wembley game in the 1960's.
They drove straight from the game to try to help at Aberfan and did not get home for 3 days, average age was about 17.

Based on my experiences of Glasgow which I've been to many times is that it is a hole. Edinburgh on the other hand is a city I really liked and happily return to now and again.

As for the game itself won't be watching as England games hold no interest for me, it's as poor an England squad as I can ever remember but should still be far to strong for Scotland.

There are parts of Edinburgh you wouldn't want to see once, let alone twice. All cities have areas that are unsavoury.

I saw some places that looked much like where I grew up in Croydon but all towns and cities have rougher areas. I think that parts I drove round in the city centre looked really good

Sister lived for 6 years in Harrow on the Hill which was fine but a mile down the road.......jesus!!

2 days in London had me demented.Hate the place with a passion.Would be more than happy if I never see it again.

It's the same in any large City, places not to go are plenty, but knowing where to go..............

Can I suggest Dodger, for the cost of a decent weekends golf, approx. £300, a 2 night stay in the Thistle Tower Hotel overlooking Tower Bridge. Fantastic views overlooking the bridge and river with all the bars and restaurants along side and opposite the Hotel. If timed right, the bridge may be opening as you walk back over to the Hotel, which is a sight to be seen. And it's true, those Chinese tourists do take lots of photos!

Then a relaxing river cruise with a choice of boat companies, offering a guided tour pointing out all the places of interest as you amble along.
How about a visit to Buckingham Palace for the audio tour inside, (wasn't going to bother at first when I went) but really worth while so you can take in all the surroundings whilst listening to very interesting historical facts, and cleverly, the audio knows which room you're in as you proceed.

If that isn't for you, the garden displays outside the Palace are outstanding, as is the changing of the guard if there at the right time. Also, again if not for you, there is the park just over the way, along with the eating places where you can get a burger and a beer, and just sit down and enjoy the surroundings.

Then in the evening take in a lovely meal in one of the many riverbank restaurants, and remember, not too much to drink, as I'm sure your Burd will want to show her appreciation for a fantastic weekend!! :p

Actually like going to London every year for a weekend with the wife love Carnabay Street could sit there all day watching the world go by,normally stay in Russell Square ,with a few pubs and restaurants makes for a good change of scenery

Wow, some of you need to get a grip! London is one one the most overpriced, unfriendly places I have ever been to, and to say it's one of the best cities in the world is a total joke! I have been to London over a dozen times to see family and friends, and although there is lots to do, I cannot abide the attitude shown by many Londoners, most of whom are not from London! Having been born and raised in Glasgow, and lived there for 32 years, anybody saying it is hole clearly needs to get out more! :sbox: Still, it's nice for a weekend away! :D

I would probably pay £200 not to do that!!
Jeez, Buckingham Palace It is rubbish and they even insult you by charging money to enter. I can go the the Peoples Palace [Kelvingrove] in Glasgow for free and it is 100 times more interesting.

True, I do not know you, but kinda' guessed what your reply might be. ;)

It was just a few light hearted ideas that I thought might appeal to your cultural side.

Please tell me you would like the bars though!

Now there's a man of good taste.

London is indeed one of the 'Greatest' cities in the world.

Greatest Traffic problems
Greatest Transport systems.
Greatest Transport issues
Greatest shopping opportunities
Greatest Rip-offs
Greatest per-Capita earnings
Greatest living costs
Greatest Diversity
Greatest 'Ghetto' count
etc.

From the limited number of times I visited Glasgow, I saw pretty much the same tendency to 'Greatness'.
Edinburgh, on the other hand, is my size 'town' and, even with the shambles that was Princes St, is my favourite UK city. It is, however, unashamedly car-unfriendly!

As for the football; something of a non-event imo. I England win it's expected. If Scotland win, it's a fix!:D

Why is it that people see just Princes St and the Royal Mile and think that Edinburgh is magnificent? It's about as valid as judging London solely on the Mall

I wish it wasn't happening as it'll be a total embarrasment for Scotland. Despite gving up on football I don't want the nation to be ridiculed and I have enough good English friends to expect elters from them, however I think they will only feel sympathy.

Interesting debate on whose city is the best / worst lol. You can't beat London for Culture but Glasgow is good for that too on a smaller scale but I wouln't live in either of them. London is truly faceless though. Took my son on the Wembley tour at Easter and it is a stunnng arena for football but its not a nice stadium outside or on the concourses.

It's funny, as a kid growing up and getting in to football I always wanted Scotland to do well (remember that England didn't go to the world cup in 74 or 78) my youthful simplistic reasoning being that they were British.

However, having witnessed the wild celebrations of Scots in pubs when a team scores against England my view has changed massively. It is truly pathetic to celebrate a goal by a country against England as if Scotland had just won the world cup. As a consequence I now take great delight in each successive humbling of 'Scotland the Brave' - I just don't dance around like a a muppet.

We have not been to London now for over 20 years that would be after my English wife ordered me to get her out of this dump!
Glasgow and Edinburgh city centres are much better, with Glasgow folk the friendliest. London folk just seem to be totally up their own backsides.
Re football, meaningless game, naebody is bothered up here. I used to be able to name the players of an England squad. The squad now seems to be mainly reserves for EPL teams. [60% of which are Jonny Foreigners.][

Lee must watch different footy. Can't think of too many England squad players that are reserves in their teams. I will grant you that Carroll is pony, not sure how Lambert didn't get called up????!
