Elected mayor for Manchester

how about sticking a toll on the M62 you can pay for the priviledge of visiting and escaping.

I'd quite happily let them build a big massive wall across the junction of the M62 so the scruffy skip rats stay in there.

In fact build a wall around the M60 and fill it with water would be even better:whoo:

May be I'm being cynical but I expect it's all playing politics and all to do with devolution and the English votes for English laws thing. As the government have promised more devolution/powers to the Scots then they also need to be seen to devolving more power out to the regions in England. So when it comes to election time they can claim that they are not so London biased to try and get some more votes elsewhere in England.

I agree with this, the fat cats with their noses in the trough looking after themselves and their cronies.

Wow, less than one page before it turns to football.
Sorry Sir lol, it is my Man Utd radar and had to bite straight away. ;) On the subject of Mayor I do not mind as long as they can improve the City Centre and the infrastructure around it. However all they seem to do now is fire the pistol to start race events and visit the local fate that is on!

Com on Matt, expected better of you.

You've still got some crumbs on your lip.......;)

Probably not di-rigeur, but I think give it a go for a few years - but getting the right man is important. Joe Anderson may not be the right man for Liverpool, but he is at least trying, and a good man can sell your city well.

HA HA :) Who ever is in charge at Liverpool at the moment have done a cracking job of rejuvenating the city centre. So much better now (since my Uni days) and it hurts for me to say a lot better place than Manchester for a night out.

It is the best night out in the UK, bar none, for all ages. IMHO

Although I did have one of my most enjoyable nights out in a club in Manchester that played punk/ska/new wave and other boss music.

Where did you live in Liverpool, and what did you study - apart from the local lasses?

The rejuvenation isn't down to our current mayor, but its a lot to build on. I think Liverpool is a more attractive city centre to look at, party in and also for the culture.

Manchester is the financial powerhouse though. We're to cool for all that malarkey, though.

Then clearly you have yet to visit Newcastle.

Had 4-5 very good nights out in Newcastle, my friend, that is why I put in the caveat of "for all ages". I think Newcastle is a cracking night out, but I haven't seen loads of places for the more mature personages in the city centre.

A geordie mate of mine said this to me initially, whereby its good for the young uns, but in his opinion Liverpool wins hands down for real ale and character pubs.

We outvote you 2-1.:)

You just need to know where to go. I'm not a Geordie but I have lived up here for years. A lot of locals tend to have their favoured haunts and stick to them. I like to wander a little more. There are a disturbing number of wine bars in the Toon now but there are still proper pubs if you look. Real ale pubs generally are less city based, high rents in the centre mean high prices and that does not lend itself to real ale. Those types of pubs, "for the older person" are found in abundance more out of town and in the country areas which if you have visited Newcastle you would know is very close by.

I do agree that Liverpool is a good night out but the spread of restaraunts, bars, pubs etc in the Toon wins it for me. All personal preference. I think we would both agree that Newcastle and Liverpool are great, compact cities that kick a large, spread city like Manchester into touch.

Sports and leisure management at John moores (poly at the time) stayed on Mount pleasant but only for a few months as my digs were minging and decided to get train instead from my home lol. Strangely as most people do never pursued a career in my chosen field and ended up working for a mobile phone company one in Speke and one in the main high street (next to dixons) but unable to remember the street name sorry

We'll call it an away score draw for me. :whoo:Have you been down in the last 5 years, Liverpool one has been built since which offers tonnes of extra restaurants and shops - don't bring the missus and a credit card though.

Jesmond is ok as well.

What years were you down here?

Dos Preston have a mayor, and if so, what type? A big chain and a 3 corner hat, or an American style one, who tells commissioner Gordon to get out and catch them bad guys.

Came for a weekend with the family a couple of years ago. I visited relatives in Liverpool for years but never did the tourist stuff. We had a great time and yes the card did take a hammering. The centre is different class now. The litter mountain that blighted Liverpool has gone and Liverpool One, excellent in its own right, now connects the centre to the docks. The centre now has a flow to it. Excellent museum as well. I've recommended it to other people to stay and visit and in all honesty I would not have done that before. Getting City of Culture was also a great catalyst for spending on the centre, good timing.

Agree with all that, although the "festival of litter" isn't always too far away.

If your down again give me a shout for a game.

Whereabouts in Northumberland are you, we had a lovely new year week in Alnmouth a few years ago. Played seahouses, walked past Dunstanburgh and another one and generally loved everywhere up that coast.

Which castle do you live in then?

Alnwick obviously, Bamburgh at the weekend. I sold Warkworth as it was a little breezy under the doors (anyone not been up to Northumberland feel free to google all 3). Alnmouth is a good course, a real test, Bamburgh is spectacular but don't touch it on a windy day. Dunstanburgh is another good one, agains links style in parts. If you want a parkland then Hexham, Slaley, Close House and Burgham are good to play. I'm in Morpeth, a decent if unspectacular parkland course.

I always remember Liverpool as a kid for its mountains of litter, never seen anywhere as bad. To go back recently and see the difference was great to see. I hope it stays that way. It was an awful advert for the city previously and would have put anyone off the place. I'll have to take you up on that next time I'm down. Same if you are coming up here.
