Following on from London. I don't know if Red Ken or lately Boris has had any positive effect in London so will this Manchester mayor have any tangible effect to the people of Manchester.

Well, if I recall correctly, the people of Manchester voted against having an elected Mayor didn't they? So I doubt it's gonna be popular.. It doesn't need it IMO..

That was before Louis Van Gaal, he's definitely having a "mare".

Don't start another football thread mate... You know how they go.. The vultures will be along quicker than you on a pile of toast at Conwy..

With regards to the OP.. What's the betting that this is a calculated ploy to introduce a degree of separation between the people and the Government, just before they introduce congestion charging in Manchester?

I always thought that it was better when a Mayor was internally elected by the local councillors, who probably know him or her personally, rather than the general electorate. Elected Mayors are a stupid American idea! Just another gravy train for career politicians!

How funny would it be if Bez was the mayor? Or what about Frank Sidebottom? Timperley to Manchester is easy now the tram line is up and running.

They tried this for the NE some years ago and it was voted down heavily. Why do we need another layer of bureaucrats, mayor plus staff etc?

Oy, thats racist that is!!! Mods, Mods... He's stereotyping us Northerners again... :D

But earlier this year Bez announced his intention to stand as an independent candidate for some constituency in Manchester, so this would seem a logical step into local politics for the self styled freaky dancer.

And in no way was I trying to stereotype the flare wearing melon twisting miserable flat cap wearing 'grim up north' rainy northern town inhabitants at all.

Derek Hatton was elected by his peers.

Bez is a scouser, actually.

Not sure if I should have admitted that!:)

We already have an elected mayor in Salford, they was a referendum a couple of years ago and only 20% bothered to vote so we got stuck with having an elected mayor.

Just another unnecessary level of bureaucracy in my opinion.

It's so annoying hearing things like this are happening when there's massive spending cuts to local government which are having a massive impact on the areas that need it.

How can they justify the cost of having a mayor whilst there's cost cutting aots?

May be I'm being cynical but I expect it's all playing politics and all to do with devolution and the English votes for English laws thing. As the government have promised more devolution/powers to the Scots then they also need to be seen to devolving more power out to the regions in England. So when it comes to election time they can claim that they are not so London biased to try and get some more votes elsewhere in England.

Yep.

At least the regions will have more say in how money is spent locally, rather than some southern based Whitehall apparatchik. They are saying up to 85% could be decided on locally for certain things like transport. I'd rather have that.
