Egypt Anybody?

Had our honeymoon in Egypt, but it was 30 years ago when it was much safer. Three days in Cairo, and 11 days on Nile cruise. Stunning place, but not sure I would do the same trip now.

Gave the builders some of my expert advice.

I climbed up to the centre chamber of the Great Pyramid at Giza. Not recommended if you suffer from claustrophobia.

I was told in no uncertain terms to stop climbing up the outside of the pyramid by a cop on a camel waving a pretty big stick. All to get a better photo.

So here's the bottom line - if you thought you might have just two years to live would you go - to see the pyramids, Luxor etc. Yes - there are plenty of other places to go - but with that constraint would Egypt be worth the risk?

#2 option currently Jordan

I can't answer for anyone else but personally I wouldn't set foot in either of those places, even in those circumstances.

There are so many amazing places to visit on this wee ball of gas, rock and ice we call home. I would be going somewhere else...

Indeed - but there is some danger and some risk in many places - I'm just wondering whether the sights and experiences of Egypt are a must do or in fact just a nice to do .

As I said, I can't answer for anyone else but they're deffo not a must do/see on my list.

You can see the actual pyramids from the windows of KFC and Pizza Hut fast food restaurants, tells me all I need to know re. not needing to go there.

Go to Peru and Mexico and see the equivalent Aztec structures

Yes I know I can - and indeed we are planning to do that as part of a three month tour of south and central america. But the sights and experiences of Egypt...

As I studied architecture I have a great interest in ancient Egypt from that perspective - my wife would have more of a tourist interest. I am hearing a 'don't bother - despite how fabulous Luxor is' . I take that on board - disappointing as it is.

So off to Jordan then instead...:)

I was being slightly flippant with an element of it being a good idea as well. However, I do take your point about Egypt being somewhere to see in normal circumstances but I am also in the camp of "not worth it" at the moment, on security alone never mind harassment, pushy selling, begging etc which is an issue in those places according to people I know who have been.

Enjoy your trip.

I went to Sharm el sheikh in 2014. Stayed in a hotel opposite the old market. The hotel itself was amazing, weather was fantastic, but I would never go back. Popped out for 10 minutes to the old market and have never been harassed so much in my life. Much prefer Turkey

Hassle I can do without. Mind you Marrakesh is a bit of 'fun' on that front and we survived that.

Yeah I had heard the whole hustle and bustle of the markets was suppose to be fun, but they were extremely aggressive. Saying that, we went to Soho square for the evening and found the locals to be much nicer there, didn't get hassled as much.

No I wouldn't, go to the Pyramids. I would seriously go to ankar Wat Cambodia. Again. Take a step back and check it out 👍

Mrs Hogan fancies 7 - maybe 10 - days in Egypt in April/May

Stays in Cairo and Luxor seem essential - but any thoughts on other locations to stay?

And any thoughts on whether a few days Nile cruise should be in our plans. We are not 'cruise' people - though a 4 day Nile cruise does not really seem quite the same as two weeks on a huge cruise liner (the latter holding no attractions to us at all)

Just spent the new year in Hurghada and it was ace, no problems locals were very friendly, friends went down to Luxor but a 3 hour each ws bus not my style but they said the valley of the kings was fantastic.

We are going to be doing Cambodia/Vietnam also - so we're not so much an A or B or C. We will do A and B - do we also do C if C is Egypt? Is my question.

If you have a great interest in it, then do it; find a way to make it safe, research it on a travel website but just go. Yes there are probably issues with it, but there will also be solutions.

Parts of Memphis aren't safe, so the first time we travelled outside we took a cab and engaged the driver in conversation; best $25 we ever spent, the safety information we got from him is priceless, but then as a cabbie he has a vested interest in tourists having a good time & keeping hold of their wallets.

You stick your nose in the music thread, have a listen to Nickelback's "If Today were Your Last Day"; "What's worth the prize is always worth the fight". There's your answer.... ;)
