Hi All,

Have recently moved back up to Scotland and am looking to join a club in edinburgh this year (inside the bypass - close enough drive from centre of town to get a round in after work in summer).

Anyone have any good ideas? Im not wanting to spend more than about 700 a year max and would like somewhere that would be friendly for new joiner.

Cheers

Lots of options for you so probably depends on exactly where you're based, what you do and don't like in a course/club, what sort of practise facilities you'd like etc.

My top two in Edinburgh (that would let me join anyway) are duddingston and mortonhall but those will set you back closer to £1000 than £700.

The council season ticket is a tad over 400 and I really like the Braid Hills course, no idea what the others are like but there are another 3-4. No idea what the attached clubs are like either.

Other than that I quite like Murrayfield and Prestonfield, but haven't played in the city all that much, would guess Murrayfield is on the more expensive side of things.

The council-run courses aren't that great, the Braids aside, but overall good value for the £400-odd quid. You'd be looking at another £100ish on top to join one of the affiliated clubs for handicap purposes.

Prestonfield and Craigmillar Park should both be around the £700 mark i would think to join. Turnhouse too, but that may be a bit more awkward to get to depending where you are in the city.

This depends on a few things Matt, what sort of course are you looking for? Do you have a preference of length of course?

There's a huge number of options in Edinburgh but you will be restricted as within the bypass it is pricey. I play at Duddingston but this sits outside your budget but I am happy to take you round if you are keen, just drop me a message.

If it was me I would either be raising the budget or looking outside the bypass, there's a couple that aren't too far away, depends where you have moved too. Again, depending on where you live don't discount the Fife courses- Aberdour, Pitreavie, Dunfermline, Forrester Park.

Musselburgh- outside bypass- £800ish a year but has been used for open qualifying
King's Acre- outside bypass- £600ish a year- resort course but well liked by many, some stupid holes though
Ratho Park- 700ish a year- I love this course but it is too short for my liking- many years ago this was voted as one of the top 5 courses in Lothians purely for enjoyment although this came from my grandad after several whiskeys so don't quote me on that.
Dalmahoy- I think if you join the smaller course only the cost is reasonable.
Kingsknowe- Played here for years, greens and maintenance are an issue though.
Prestonfield, Baberton, Merchants lands around your price mark I believe but I personally would be extending my budget.

The council season pass is good value at £400. Gives you access to 7 courses and you join a club for around 60 a year but these are not maintained to any sort of standard. Ultimately you will only want to play the Braids which is a great course that needs someone to look after it properly.

How old are you? If you are under 30/35 in some cases these prices can come down significantly.

Been a while since I've been up there, but Duddingston and Mortonhall are almost certainly the 2 best courses within the bypass - bit almost certainly outside your price point. I don't include TheMusselburgh, only because I'm not certain whether it's inside or out! If it's inside, then add it to the list also - and it would probably be my preference too!

However, all year round golf (albeit not 'after work!) is available slightly further out on links courses, for not a lot of extra travel time!

Now that Mrs SILH is thinking we move to Embra I'm thinking Duddingston or Mortonhall - both only 25mins or so from Stockbridge, Dean Village or Broughton - and relatively inexpensive...:)

If you drive 3/4 minutes off the Lasswade junction you could play Broomieknowe! Some of the best greens through the summer months 😀. If you fancy a game here to try it out then let me know 🏌

That the property prices or the club fees you're talking about ? Perhaps a man of your wealth & influence should be looking at Royal Burgess or Bruntsfield - both closer to your preferred areas in town ;)

Last time I looked Mortonhall still had a hefty joining fee in excess of £2k (admittedly 3 or 4 years ago)

Still has and I'd expect that to continue, there always seems to be a list there.

Thanks very much everyone for the helpful suggestions. Looks like i have to increase my budget a bit and start checking out the courses.

Thanks also for the very kind offers of a round at some courses. Very generous. Will be in touch through PM once ive narrowed the choices down a bit.

Cheers
