Hello all!

I've been reading posts here for a while but never got around to joining in and thought it was about time! I originally took up the game 20 years ago after watching Nick Faldo win the 1992 Open at Muirfield (I recall being laid up with scarlet fever at the time and watched the whole thing unfold on the Beeb). However work and family commitments meant I unfortunately drifted away from the game for much of the last 10 years.

Recently though I've been bitten by the bug again and with more time on my hands I've started to play a bit. The wife told me exercise was in order anyway (ahem! :o) and so duly encouraged I bought myself some new kit. Being closer to 50 than 20 these days I'm finding it all a bit of a struggle but hope to get back somewhere near to where I felt I was "back in the day" which was sort of low/mid teens (ish!) when the Gods were in a good mood and nearer 20 when they weren't.

I'm East Sussex based and have been re-visiting some of my old haunts over the past couple of weeks. I spent an enjoyable few hours reminding myself just how tough a track Beauport Park is the other day and have discovered a new (to me) 9 hole course at Dewlands Manor for a bit of contrast.

Anyways I've enjoyed reading all the comments on the forum for a few weeks now and felt it was high time I participated so I is dunlurkin :D

Yes that's the one. Very pretty but after a few holes it gets a bit mountainous. The back 9 is particularly tough but it was where I first played and so I've got fond memories.

Coincidentally I saw that the Beauport Park website contains a photo that I reckon is from another course. Here is the photo purporting to show one of the back 9 holes:

and here is the one from Eichenheim in Austria:

Pretty similar eh? But still a great course nonetheless.

I'd often heard tales of how hard Beauport Park was so decided to give it a bash one day. 4 of us went down and booked up for 36 holes. Played the first 4 or 5 and I turned to my mate and said "I don't see what all the fuss is about"....and then it hit us! Bloody hell, one of the toughest golf courses I have ever played. I don't think I've ever played such a "leggy" course in my life, and wouldn't rush back there.
We came in after 18 holes, sat down to have something to eat and four old boys sitting there said "what did you think of it?"
When we told them we were going out to play another 18 they just looked at each other and shook their heads.
No kidding....any handicap achieved around there is worth a couple of extra shots at any other golf course you care to mention. Welcome to the forum by the way. I'm in East Sussex myself.

Welcome Blam, another Sussexer here. Not played the clubs you mention though - anywhere else you are thinking of playing?

I'm thinking about Lewes and Crowborough Beacon when I get some kind of game back. Perhaps Eastbourne Downs too and then there's that Woosnam course at Dale Hill I've read about so plenty to look forward to.

Get a game with Smiffy if you can. Decent bloke (despite rumours you may hear on here to the contrary about him being an old git) who has played a lot of the courses down your way. Welcome on board btw and enjoy
