Thinking of going to the Dunhill Links in a couple of weeks.....likely Carnoustie or St Andrews on the Saturday. For anyone's who's been before, is it a decent day out? Assume crowds aren't huge so you can get a good view of the golf. Can you get a beer and some food out on the course?

yes been a couple of times. pleasant enough for day out, and given its free. Good to get close to the players and few celebs (my kids liked following the football players). Been to St Andrews and Kingsbarns. There isnt a lot of food/drink outlets though. Just a few at the start (and at the turn on St Andrews)

Done it a number of times. Great for keen golfers to see the pro’s having some fun. And especially good for those that have a passing interest in golf but like to see the celebs.

A good option for the Sunday night is the Old Course Hotel. It’s pennies compared to the Saturday night. We stayed over near Carnoustie on the saturday night. Travelled to Carnoustie for mid morning Saturday. Stayed over then travelled onto St Andrews on the Sunday morning. Most people have the hassle of getting away from St Andrews on the Sunday. We had a great evening, saw some pro’s celebs out and about then a leisurely breakfast on the Monday before setting off.

Yup to all, crowds very sparse, especially if you avoid any big name holywooder, and there's usually only couple of those

Go up every year on the Thursday, generally head to Carnoustie for the AM and then swing down to St Andrews (draw/names dependant). Pretty good day out: Free parking, free entry, get extremely close to everyone (admittedly not sure how much that's cause a Thursday/1st day feeling vs. other day crowds) and can follow around quite closely.

Going to be an interesting one this year as there's a lot of very big names coming for it: McIlroy normally plays every couple of years and gets a good crowd (but you still get really close) and lots of other PGA/DP/Liv big names coming.

I'll probably do my usual of following Bill Murray around for the 1st 9: he's always good value to watch

Going up next for this next Saturday, driving up from Liverpool Friday evening and staying in Falkirk to break the journey up a bit.
Any recommendations for a quick early 9 holes on the Sunday morning, near Falkirk, before the wife and kids surface?

I am going to this with my son on the Saturday also.We live only an hour away so no problem there. Does anyone know if it’s possible to drive up early and park down where all the cars park down near the beach and walk from there to the first tee,or if the road down to the beach parking will be closed for the event?

Which course are you talking about? Not sure about Saturday (I only go thursday) but generally for Parking you follow the signs and get directed for:

Carnoustie - the grass before the hotel (Once before I got directed to park in a field next to 9th green/10th fee but that was about 10 years ago)
St Andrews - Parking is on the balgrove course itself, then you walk past the golf academy and in via the gates around the 16th Fairway
Kingsbarns - Parking is in the field next to the driving range

Not sure how much of the event takes over the St Andrews car parks, but I think they're still all open (and so are the other courses) so you should be fine to park early if that's what you're after.

Thanks for your reply 👍. Going to St Andrews

This is pretty much the only one locally that you will get on a Sunday morning.

A friend was at ST Andrews today. Free entry and from his pictures, it's just him and the golfers. Great way to see players up close.

He did say Gareth Bale was a bit more than useful after watching him play a few holes. That lad is living the dream 😄

Worked it last year but was a bit of a washout. Heading over to Kingsbarns tomorrow for a gander. All days are free to watch except the final at St Andrews on Sunday.

We had a great weekend, my lad got a few balls and tees off Robert Rock and Jaco Prinsloo's caddies, he had a Liverpool training top on and the caddies were Scousers, made his day! Rory and Billy Horschel signed his cap as well, it was great for the kids to get close to the players.
We ended up watching the Liverpool match in Hams Hame, £8.10 for a Guinness and £11.20 for a glass of Rose! The food was excellent though.
Can't wait to go back one day and play The Old Course.
