You know that "rule" where your ball drops into say thick grass, you and everyone saw it but you can't find it? And if everyones in agreement where it was you can drop in the fairway with a two shot penalty? Can this be used when you are putting a general play card in?

I don‘t think so.

The ball is lost —> Rule 18!

Only if the ball is found can you declare it unplayable, drop it, and continue play with a one-stroke penalty —> Rule 19.

But I'm always open to learning something new ! 🤷‍♀️

I think he means local rule E-5 where you were meant to go from the agreed location on an arc that takes you to just on the fairway and then drop for a 2 stroke penalty.

I've never heard of any club using the rule, and the powers that be declared that using it would make the round non-qualifying. So that would be a "no" for GP cards I guess.

As @Beedee said , the rule makers brought it in as an option but the handicap authorities instantly said it would not be acceptable. Fine for social play, not fine for official stuff.
Thought so. But it would help general play cards. I mean, who thinks everyone who puts those in are following the rules exactly? We know player in club comps don't even do that!

If you’re putting in a card then you should be playing exactly by the rules. If you know players in comps aren’t playing then they should be reported.

You are I assume referring to Model Local Rule E-5, in which case the answer is a no for GP cards as it is for competitions. Has your club adopted this LR, I have not heard of any club in the UK that has done so.

Is this the odd player, a few players, some players or most players in your experience?

Well, it seems to me like an alternative to the current rule and worth considering: In any case, it takes more time to go back to the spot from which you hit the lost ball (if you can find it at all…) than to drop a ball where you (roughly) lost the original one! 🤷‍♀️

But as long as it’s not provided for in the rules… (n)

Seems a bit of a strange question from someone who was going to take over the running of their old handicap committee. Surely someone who thinks that the committee were so bad should understand a fairly basic rule?

We have been using this rule E-5 in our society events for the last 4 years. I personally think that it should be brought into all forms of competitions.
The amount of time it potentially saves, especially nowadays when everyone moans about not being able to get round in sub 3 hours ;)

Imagine the scenario, 4-ball all hit their drives, and one of them can’t find his ball, all look for 3 minutes, now he must walk 200+ yards back to the tee, just as the behind 4-ball walk onto the tee. This causes an unnecessary bunching up of the course, when an already 2 shot penalty is punishing enough.

Or maybe they just take a provisional

Surely common sense is in order

If you have any inkling that you may struggle to find the ball then take a provisional
Of course take a provisional when in doubt, but if you and Neilds can't see the scenerio that sometimes happens then fair enough, you and him can walk all the way back to the tee if you want.
I know I play a lot of golf, but I reckon it happens to me about half a dozen times a year when I can't find what I thought was an alright drive, especially on blind drives or cutting off dog-legs
