When u get a drop in a bunker is it from knee height or placed? Recently I was playing and the bunker had water in it, my playing partners all said I get a free relief from the water, and get to place it in the bunker.

Drop from knee height.

Rule 14 covers when and how the player may mark the spot of a ball at rest and lift and clean the ball and how to put a ball back into play so that the ball is played from the right place.
  • When a lifted or moved ball is to be replaced, the same ball must be set down on its original spot.
  • When taking free relief or penalty relief, a substituted ball or the original ball must be dropped in a particular relief area.

I can't imagine where they got their ruling from. Ask them to show it to you in the book. An old one will do as the rule hasn't changed.

The only time I know of for placing in a bunker is when playing a Texas Scramble and the club has the rule 'recreate the lie in a bunker' for subsequent players shots.

Other than replacing it, as rulefan quotes

They might have got it from the old book .
Usually when a bunker is flooded the only place to drop is on the slopes around the edges.
So if you drop twice and it runs into the water you can then place it.
Not sure if it’s a LR .

This is more likely now as it dosnt plug in wet sand because the height you drop it from is much lower.

In our Texas Scrambles, the only time the subsequent players can place it is on the fairway and green. We have to drop it in the rough and bunkers. Usually find the same rules are applied at Scrambles on away courses.

Thankfully we rarely elect to take a bunker shot.

I remember playing in one where the choice was a bunker shot from a very good lie or a chip over it from a totally bare lie and I could not persuade my partners to play the bunker shot. Our third shot was from the bunker because all of us thinned the chip shot in to the bunker.

Well, at least you got your wish in the end :)

... and, to be hoped, an up and down.

For Scrambles, I prefer to have playing the first as it lies and then allowing raking and placing for the next ones, for no other reason than saving time.

To be honest, I hate that under any normal conditions, you have to drop in the bunker. Even from knee height. You almost always get a plugged lie, which isn't the case when you've hit you ball in the bunker with your shot. Doesn't seem right, especially for faireay bunker shots.

Forget knee height drops, I wouldn't complain if the rules got rid of dropping all together and allowed you to place the ball. Even if it's under penalty, the penalty is your punishment, why compound that with a plugged bunker lie or a bounce into a divot or towards a bush?

Anyway, the drops are getting closer to the ground at least. 2022 it will be changed to shin height, 2025 ankle height, 2028 place the ball. Progress is great
