Driving Range Price

I wish my club was a little closer to home, at rushhour it'd be at least 45 mins drive away or I can go to the local range in less than 10 minutes. After work when I just want to bash some balls the choice is an easy one to make.

Where are you about mate. you said on J_F's review of my home club (Pumphy) that you were not far from it. Prestonfield would be a bit of a drive at anytime.

What range is now charging £6 for 100 balls? Is it Houston?

I'm in East Calder dude, so not far from Pumphy at all. My Grandad was one of the original members and had a bit to do with it when it changed to 18 holes from 12.

Yeah, the range I was talking about is Houston, which isn't a bad range, certainly better than the one at the airport.

Prestonfield is only 25/30 mins away on a Saturday morning as the bypass isn't that busy if you leave early enough. If I fancy a knock after work (Gyle) and I don't have clubs with me then the thought of going home, dropping off the wife, getting clubs then driving through the Edinburgh home time rush really isn't that appealing ;)

The place I used to go to was £4.00 for 80 balls, then they put the prices up to £4.40 for 70 balls!!!!....needless to say a lot of people, myself included left. I have heard they reduced the price back to £4.00 for 80 as a summer discount for August but apparently the place is deserted.

I now go to a place that does an £8 card that gets you 5 x 40 ball baskets, so its £1.60 for 40. Its floodlit, nice mats and the balls aren't too bad.

Just played the Forest of Arden yesterday and it was £1 for 15 balls on the range. Steep definately but if fairness there is a chipping green with loads of free range balls on so you didn't have to use your own or do short chipping practise on the range.

The range close to me is £3.50 for 35 balls and £4.50 for 70.

I don't mind paying £1 per 15 on a range before a game. I think I've paid £4 for 50 before.....it's a once-off and it's good to hit a few before playing.

As a general I think £2 per 40 is about right.
i.e. £4-5 for 80-100
I went to a brand new range t'other day.

£2 for 30
£3 for 55
£4 for 90

I though that was fair.

Hi scoopy. I think £3.50 for 50 is too much.

If my local range went from £2 for 40 to £3.50 for 50, I think the "regulars" would stop going.
If 100 twice-a-week guys stopped spending their money there, the range would lose 100 x 52 x £4 - that's nearly £21,000
It could be an expensive decision.

I think the people that run some ranges are numpties.
If you want to make it expensive, do it BUT offer a deal for the regulars, otherwise there won't be any.

Only use it very very rarely cos we've got a nice big field at the course for practise. But I seem to recall its £2 for a bucket of 40 balls

I prefer the practice ground if possible. I've loads of old Titleist in the practice bag so get an honest feedback on my shots in terms of flight and distance. Far more realistic and accurate. Granted it's a pain picking them up and I'm lazy so use one of those clikka tubes and empty it into the practice bag. It actually quite quick that way and so doesn't interrupt anyone else for too long
