Driver!!

Being new to the game I was after some friendly advice, is it worth me putting the driver away for now as I am very inconsistent and sticking with the 3i OR is the difference that great i would benefit from lessons with the driver..the question was answered..yes, it is worth booking some lessons, and thanks to all you posters in helping me with the descision.

If you hit it are far as you say why are you not on the European Tour then.

1. because I can't do it often enough
2. I said nothing about where they went (straight as it happens)
3. there's all these other things to do before it goes in the hole

be nice, allow me a little bit of vanity

It's no wonder the more forgiving clubs in a manufactuers line up are so strongly lofted. Just read the above posts. It seems that distance is everything.

I know from previous threads that a number of respondants here aren't 'distance' merchants. So it's a bit harsh to label this thread as the above poster has. However, no smoke etc.

But getting back to my first paragraph. It's all about consistency. I haven't got a clue from one shot to the next how far my shots will go. I know what a good shot will do, and I know what a bad shot will do. But as to how far it'll go this time is anyones guess.

What impresses me is the player that can put his ball on the green. Not which club he used.

Back to the OP though. I nailed my 5 iron past my mates driver last weekend, and he was pleased with his shot. It was a good shot of his. But, in my mind, if I'd hit a longer club, chances are the ball would be in the rough or in the ditch at the end of the fairway. Don't get hung up on distance. Work on consistent distances with each club, and if it's safer to go shorter but straighter, do so.

Note to self. Do remember above advice when facing a gully off the tee!!

Quite a difference then murph! I was hitting the 3i around the 180-190 mark, so I take it is well worth a few lessons focusing on my driving, then hopefully reap the rewards!

So if your hitting your 3 iron further than your driver.....how far are you hitting the driver????

Usually play 3i controlled into wind, so take a little off of it, say 260, driver on average 340, but I'm catching them a little off the heel at the moment, so around 310.

:D :D :D Average 340? LOLOLOL
Are these your Xbox stats? :D

To be honest distance wise it's probably around the same mark, just not straight!

My 3 iron goes approx 215-220 yards compared to my driver which is around 280 yards. There is 1 maybe 2 people in my club that are longer than me, of which one won a national long drive competition.

I don't know of anyone who can hit a 3 iron 250 yards. I'm not saying Vig doesn't but I would love to see it, that's Alvaro Quiros long!!

I like Quiros!

Where you from Simon?

Come to the course and stand at 250 on the fairway and see how long you "dare" stand there whilst I hit 20 balls. :D
I'm only taking the rip mate. ;)

I HAVE to hit my irons long cos i'm sh'ite with the driver.

I creamed a 5 iron 245 on our 3rd when I played with Robo. I was trying to lay up but......... didn't

I'm from Buxton in Derbyshire (the wettest place in the England lol)

You don't need a driver if you hit your irons like that. What's your handicap?

Guys this post is ******** ,all this bravado of big hitting is boring take a look at your handicaps thats the real test of a golfer, whooppee so you all think you hit it miles so what and who cares .If you hit it are far as you say why are you not on the European Tour then.

I don't see why it gets people so worked up about these sort of threads. Just take it for what it is, a bit of fun.

Big hitting has nothing to do with being a tour pro. Lots of people can hit is as long as a them. Where they are so much better is from 100 yards in. Also they are much more consistent, they have almost exact yardages with each club whereas most club golfers may hit a 7 iron 130 on one shot and 160 on the next.

My problems are I take too many putts tour pros average around 28-29 (correct me if I'm wrong), I take 33-34 on average thats 5 shots right away. I would give up some yardage to be able to put like these guys it makes a massive difference. I've knocked it round 4 over gross in a competition last year where I had 40 putts :o

Games been a train wreck for a few months now. Inconsistent, S***ks, poor putting.
Just completed 36 holes without a S***k so fingers crossed, the pro's lesson is starting to work.

They will do the trick. The thing is to be prepared to get worse before you get better.

I've been having lessons again and I couldn't get anywhere near my handicap for the first 7 medals or so. I went up and up. But now I've got used to the changes in my swing I've played the last 3 medals in 2 over gross, with some pretty poor putting.
