Hi, played this morning and had an absolute nightmare with the driver off the first 2 holes, hooked one into trees on the first and a 'strong fade'on the second saw me on another fairway! after that decided a 3 iron is the ploy for the rest of the round on par 4 and 5's! I found I was hitting it longer and straighter than my diver anyway,(even on a good day) so my question is how much further do you guys expect to hit your driver compared to your 3 iron? btw I also struggle with the 3 wood!

3i about 215, driver anywhere up to 283, so quite a difference really. If all else fails, I would rather hit a gentle fade with my 5w, as that is mr reliable.

I hit my driver between 250yds & 280yds depending on conditions etc, I'm not entirely sure on the distance of my 3I as I dont use it that often.

The last time I used it was on a 220yd par 3 and I was pin high but slightly wide of the green.

I play often with vig though, and he can hit his 3I as long as my driver on regular occasions.

Quite a difference then murph! I was hitting the 3i around the 180-190 mark, so I take it is well worth a few lessons focusing on my driving, then hopefully reap the rewards!

A 3i 250 yds plus!! I truly am a novice at this game :D

My 3 iron goes approx 215-220 yards compared to my driver which is around 280 yards. There is 1 maybe 2 people in my club that are longer than me, of which one won a national long drive competition.

I don't know of anyone who can hit a 3 iron 250 yards. I'm not saying Vig doesn't but I would love to see it, that's Alvaro Quiros long!!

He certainly did, the 13th at our course is a straight 286yds par 4, I hit my driver and ended up in a greenside bunker, and he hit his 3I and he was about 10yds behind me but in the rough on the right with his shot. At least 250yds.

Thats crazy, I don't know how people create that much clubhead speed it's not human!

I've got a mate who boasts about hitting his short irons ridiculous distances but really all he is doing is closing the face and making it a 4 iron, thats why they all end up miles left aswell. He wont have it though, He'll hit a 9 iron and be pin high but 20yds left of the target and tell me to get on the weights even though i'm hitting 7 iron and usually on the green.

Vig cant be doing this as he is hitting 3 iron, he must just be one powerfull man, or have a quality technique.

Does anyone else class there distances as how far they can carry the ball with each club or how far it goes in total including bounces and roll??

my longest drive with my driver is 320yds breeze assisted. It usually goes around 240ish though, including roll, maybe 210 carry - sometimes a wee bit more. I think the 320 yd drive was a one in every 100 drives where it's just sweet.

3i i'm hitting about 180-90. I think i could get further but then it might start going a bit wayward. I also think i could maybe get different shafts to help with distance but i like the shot shape i get with the current ones (high and comes down like a stone and doesn't roll very far) even though i'm robbed of a few yards.

My distances are based on carry plus roll, I play a fairly soft course though. When I play the courses near where I work then I'm closer to 300 yards when I'm striking the ball properly, but thats down to teh extra roll I'm getting. I carry it about 270 under normal conditions, y clubhead 112-115mph. I've been up to 120mph but that is a very rare occurance.

best I ever did with a 3-i was up toward 240 - but just the once. managed 220 odd with a 4-i, again just the once.

but I played with a US first sargeant from Alconbury, a monster - hits pro distances 170+ with a 9-i.

270-280 yards for 112mph swing sounds about right to me. I'm in the same swing speed bracket when swinging freely. Launch speed approx 162mph if I remember correctly :D

I hit my 3-iron about 220, might push the boat out to 230 maybe but would probably opt for a 5-wood at that stage.

I like Quiros!

Where you from Simon?

Come to the course and stand at 250 on the fairway and see how long you "dare" stand there whilst I hit 20 balls. :D
I'm only taking the rip mate. ;)

I HAVE to hit my irons long cos i'm sh'ite with the driver.

I creamed a 5 iron 245 on our 3rd when I played with Robo. I was trying to lay up but......... didn't

Guys this post is ******** ,all this bravado of big hitting is boring take a look at your handicaps thats the real test of a golfer, whooppee so you all think you hit it miles so what and who cares .If you hit it are far as you say why are you not on the European Tour then.
