Ok iv been pondering over this one for a few weeks.....

Currently i hit my 3 hybrid off the fairway from 175mtrs.... Thats carry.... In cold temps.... I dont know if this will change when the the warmer temperatures kick in or not.... Iv GPS'd this on more than one occasion so its an average not a once off..... Now off the tee ill usually get maybe another 6-8 mtrs carry distance but thats it... Thats swinging controlled at 80%...

Now like most i also carry a 3 wood between this and my driver....But heres the catch.....We have a Par 3 thats 200mtrs off the whites and i normally hit the 3 wood from here if the wind is hurting a little.... I can reach it with the 3h but thats coming out of my socks and ill make the front 1/3rd of the green at that....

So does anyone not carry a 3 and have they substituted it for a 4 wood or a 5 wood or even a 2h?

Im thinking that the 5 wood should be longer than the 3 Hybrid that i have..It will definitely be easier to hit from the fairway and the rough than the 3 wood and ill get it elevated a lot faster as well..... Distance loss should be minimal enough and it should be good to hit on tight holes as well should the need arise...

2 of our Par 5's are kind of out of 3 wood reach anyway due to the prevailing wind normally being into your face so ill nearly always lay up on them and even if there is no wind one of them is still unreachable as its uphill....
So your really just trying to get up around the front of the green somewhere if you do hit the 3 Wood....

My driving is starting to settle a little and iv no idea how far i actually carry the driver.... But i think its probably around 220-230mtrs... The only way i gauge this is that on our 5th Par 5 we have an oak tree thats 230mtrs from the tee... The tee is elevated about 15ft or so and during the summer a good drive will normally pitch in line with that tree....

So iv got 220-230 Driver and 175-183 mtrs with the 3H... I know its about a 45mtr gap and i know 1 club for most wouldnt be enough to close it but i think i might be able to halve that with either a 5 wood or something else..... Any thoughts....

I believe you have a choice.

Either
Set your bag up to play your course.
or
Set your bag up to play any course.

There are distinct advantages in doing either, depending on how often you play other courses.

In a perfect world, you could do both! But with cost being a factor....

If a 4 wood would be the club for that Par 3, then that's what I'd recommend. It's a pretty good all-round weapon anyway.

I bought a 4-hybrid with a particular hole in mind.

I have this dilemma too. Currently i have a driver a 3 wood a 19 degrees hybrid and a 22 degree hybrid. In addition i carry 4-PW irons plus GW SW LB. In total this makes 15 clubs

I am alternating between carrying the 3 wood without the 19 degrees hybrid, all woods without the 60 lob wedge or leaving the 3 wood out the bag

Right now I seem to be favouring leaving the 3 wood out. My thinking being I actually don't hit it very often. I tend to think i drive the ball fairly straight so i usually hit driver off the tee. This leaves 3 wood only for 2nd shots on par 5's realistically. Whereas I can hit my 19 degree hybrid here. Distance doesn't seem to be an issue. I reached a 511 yard flat par 5 hitting driver 19 degree hybrid the other week. In additional on a tight par 4 i can still hit 19 hybrid off the tee without losing too much distance

I tried leaving the 60 degree wedge out the bag but at times i feel its a needed club when you shortside yourself or have to go over a bunker etc. Also I know my yardage on it and it can help to hit a full 60 as opposed to a knock down SW.

The only issue is my 3 wood is a fairly new R11S so i want to feel like I didnt buy it and then not use it.

The other option is to leave the 4 iron out the bag. However I play Maxfli Revolution black dots. The lofts aren't strong so there is still a gap between my 4 iron and 22 degree hybrid which would be too big if i go from 22 hybrid to 5 iron.

Anyone else have an issue when they just can't decide what club to leave out the bag? I guess the trick is to make sure I drive straight so I have confidence in the driver!

I suspect that this is probably the most common practical situation for many - possibly add in a 5 wood and you have most options available!

I tend to rotate the clubs based on a combination of conditions and confidence - right now I have d, weak 3w 5w 4-LW ie no hybrids. I have 2 pairs of hybrids and a common summer set up is d, strong3w, h,h, 5-LW or D h h 4-SW. The LW will depend on the nature of the bunkers and greens set up.

There's no right answer, just go with what you feel is right for you on the day.

I'd got with this, but also don't feel you HAVE to use 14 kid, I currently play a 13 club set up and don't see any gaps, couple that with scores that come in when the club holds 5 club comps... I could drop half my clubs and score there or there abouts ;)

i stuck a 5 wood in my bag between driver and hybrid. I am loving it as an option on tighter holes from the tee, off the deck everywhere i can! would say the 5 wood is -30yrds of driver and the 5 wood is 15-20 yrd longer than the hybrid..

What degree hybrid vs 5 wood do you play Rooter?

I would be interested to see if there was much distance differential for me in 19 degree hybrid vs 19 degree 5 wood

Ping i20 5 wood is 18deg, my hybrid is a TM RBZ2 #4 at 22deg i think.

A 19 vs a 19, wont see a huge distance difference IMHO, however i would say probably very different flights and usable from very different lies...

I play a rocketballz stage 1 22 degree hybrid as well. they certainly fly off the face don't they. My 19 degree hybrid is a wilson staff. I think i may get a few more yards having 5 wood over it but not worth changing now. As you say though i think driver, 19 degree, 22 degree in whatever format maybe the right way to go. You don't lose many yards over the 3 wood and gain the added control

My set up is driver, 4w, 3h.

Not for any other reason than I couldn't find a 3w that I liked. The 4w (a Ping G10 17*) is easy peasy to hit, and was £35 from a certain internet auction site :)
