How long is a piece of string? I'd suggest a trip to a pro shop or American Golf. I got my first driver a year ago and am still struggling with it, whether that's because I bought it 'off the shelf' or cos I can't hit the damn thing I do not know, it's a tough club to get right!

Get any Ping driver with a regular shaft and 10.5 degrees of loft and you will be fine for at least the next 18 months.

if you are very new to the game, i would suggest that starting off with your 3 wood and hybrids off the tee will be more than sufficient.

from my own experience (and other experiences are available) until i was playing to 18 ish, the driver got me in far more trouble than it was worth. it's the hardest club in the bag to hit and i was better getting used to playing with the shorter length clubs before a driver really gave any benefit to my game.

watching other beginners hit drivers doesn't change my opinion now either...

I agree with the above but I waited for my driver until I got under 16 hcp. Although Its more fun hitting a driver I'm not sure it'shugely beneficial to my game still.

When I started playing regularly I bought a Ping G5 regular shaft 10.5 degree loft from ebay for c. £70. I haven't looked back - I love that club.

If you're sure you want a driver, (even if just to confirm you shouldn't use it!) I would go for a second hand club from a couple of years ago - the latest technology won't really be of that much benefit at this stage.

Then in a year or two, get one custom fitted to your game.

Personally I don't really buy into the stay away from a Driver train of thought. Looking at a driver in comparison to a 3 wood/hybrid/driving iron, the driver is a much easier club to hit and hit well. Modern drivers have a head the size of a small car, the sweetspot is massive, you don't need to swing them at a million miles an hour and with plenty of loft the ball gets airborne very easily. I think people struggle with drivers because they get too little loft and shafts that are too stiff and then try and melt the ball into the next county.

I am with Snelly's reccomendation. Coupled with a nice easy, lazy swing you'll be fine. Drivers emphasise the mantra "hit it better not harder", and that's the key.
