Just looking at the latest offerings. They are horrifically expensive!! Or am I the only person who thinks this? When did it become acceptable?

not sure the prices have changed much for a long while have they. The very first big berthas 20 years ago were £300 can get the latest Ping G for that price.

if you go exotic shaft wise then the prices can really become eye watering but not sure the top end off the shelf drivers have gone up barely at all

and if you wait a year or two then you can get them for less than half that price for most

Driver prices went silly expensive round about 2006. Then when the financial crash hit prices were pegged back for a while. Definitely hitting silly numbers again, as are iron sets and wedges.

Premium irons at over £700, and then cough up £140 a Vokey.

It's not difficult to spend over £2k to get kitted out.

Wood £350
Fairway £175
Hybrids 2x £180 = £360
Irons £700
Vokey £120
Putter £120
Cart bag £120
Motocady M1 £550
GG W'proofs £400
Shoes £80

Closer to £3k by the time you add in clothes, balls, tees etc.

The solution is easy: don't read/watch any of the newest club reviews. Just store them away and read/watch them two years later. You can then buy the club that manufacturer x promises you will solve all your problems for less than half the original price. You are not missing out on anything.

The vapor I got there was 149 yet last summer it was 300plus

Personally If I was changing I go for a year/two year old model.

The downside of this of course Is where you tend to get a driver fitting it's all the latest models. So i go this year for a fitting take a note of what you got fitted for and then buy it when it goes on sale.

It prices will always fall some more than others just matter of waiting on the new model.

Totally agree.
Save your money for golfing holidays :)

I got sucked in by the hype and bought an M2, my old TM driver was a R510 - I thought technology etc wold have come a long way in the 10 years or so so splashed £250.....

the M2 is definitely more forgiving - my driving accuracy and distance hasn't really changed. A lot of money to look down at a bit of carbon weave instead of gloss paint.

Similar story with my old Spalding excellence irons and my new 850's

will be keeping my £10 Wilson Augusta 2 putter forever.....

you have gone cheap end on the shoes and bag. I would say £140 for shoes and £170 for a cart bag with not even going top prices.
You could also add £250 ish for a laser rangefinder.

I did something similar. When I get the urge to change/upgrade something I'd read the reviews that came out when my current gear was launched and if it still sounds like something I thought could do the job and I'd still buy it, then its happy days as I've already got it! :)

I bought the M1 driver and 3 wood recently. Cost a fortune but my last driver was the R7 so shows how frequently I upgrade clubs. I'll get a lot of use out of these and only upgrade when there is a significant performance difference

Funnily enough, I was thinking 'wow' after picking up my brand new 'last years model' cobra fly-z for £120....

For anyone with their head screwed on and access to a computer, golf equipment has probably never been cheaper in real terms.

If there is a demographic prepared to pay extraordinary amounts of money for something that will be half as much in a year's time, then the industry owes it to them to give them that opportunity....

I always think this mate - previously had a set of Mizuno irons that I paid £550 for brand new.
Although they were brilliant clubs and served me well they were a lot of money at the time.

I upgraded this year as needed to make the transition to stiff shafts.
Did not want to spend a lot though so went for the Wilson Staff FG Tour M3's - picked them up for £250 and they are the nicest irons i've used to date!

Being honest, the price of clubs is what it is. Do I wish I could get the best equipment for less than I am paying for it, of course I do. However I look at this relatively. My clubs cost me a grand total of £1300. That's all my clubs. So far my irons have lasted 2 seasons, I will get another season at least out of them, same with my wedges and my driver/ 3 wood are 1 year in. Again I think another season at least before I consider something new.

On average my clubs last 3 years before I would even look at something new (not saying I change every 3 years but as a minimum). So for that £1300 + my membership which we can say as an average is around £800 per year is a cost of £3700= Just over £100 per month. For that money I get around 10-12 hours of entertainment every week, £2.50 per hour. Try doing anything else for that price!

Add in to it that when I do get new gear I will sell my older stuff, probably getting about £600 back for it and it becomes even better.

Everyone has their budgets and yes, this is a large chuck of my disposable income. I just feel its worth it when I break it down.

Or maybe I have become so versed in rationalising this expenditure to the missus that I actually believe myself!

Now, how much is that Scotty Cameron again....

Filling your car with fuel is £60 odd, A pack of fags is £10, physio is £50 an hour ... Golf equipment is cheap!
