Driver on the bench

Played today using only my 3 Wood off the Par 4's and 5's as a bit of an experiment to see if i could do without.

What transpired was probably the only round iv played where the ball went exactly where i wanted it to off the tee.

I missed only 1 fairway out of 14 which was pretty good.....
I dont even think i was loosing any distance if anything it may have been slightly longer on some shots due to it staying under the wind....Another advantage of it.

This either means that my driver isnt suited to me(never been custom fit for one) as im sure there should be a decent length difference between driver and wood.....

Iv decided to play maybe until june without it and see what happens.

Im the same on my home course as its really tight and i dont think its a bad thing,as you say there is not much distance loss and can be hit straighter,i put it down to good course management,however on more open courses i use the driver regulary with more margin for error.

I think it depends on the course as well. If it is tighter at your driver distance, and you can't get on in 2 on the par 5, you are better off hitting whatever will get you in the fairway.

Maybe the driver is a problem. I see it is a draw biased thing? How do you hit it? The shaft may say stiff, but that shaft is pretty soft compared to a UST V2 or something like that.

Another shot you can learn is to go down the grip a bit, tee the driver a shade lower, back in the stance a fraction and hit what would now be called a stinger drive for more control.

Funny you mention the shafts Ethan.....
In my Woods i have Stiff ProForce V2 shafts which i hit well.
The driver on the other hand was a bit of an impulse buy.....Played one round with it to try, it was pretty straight and i thought oh yes iv found the magic one.
It wasnt to be though.

Should try my driver looks like a 3W with 10.5* so.......

The new ones look so good and the Ping G15 I tried was so easy to hit. Pity my club joining and annual membership have wiped me out

It is funny how well a lot of people seem to score when they leave the big dog alone and its been mentioned on here a lot. I seem to remember a few people trying it especially in the summer and getting good results.

I do tend to find though that on tighter courses if I take a 3 wood or even a long iron out "for safety" on a tighter hole I get tight and tell myself its a difficult drive and tend to get a bit quick and snatchy and either hit a big hook or big push and wish I'd just hit driver as I wanted. That said I'm having a good relationship with my 3 wood at the moment but don't really get that much opportunity at my course to usr it in the winter on most driving holes. Once it drys out though there are plenty more chances to get it out and so I can see myself reducing the number of shots with Mr Big Dog and laying up short of the ditches and trouble with Mr Consistant 3 wood

Where's your sense of adventure. You will never master those tricky escape shots from the thick rough,trees etc when you are always down the middle of the fairway.

Horses for courses Homer.....my short game really left me for dead this morning I went out with the driver in the bag but temptation didnt get the better of me.... I stuck fast with the 3 wood ......I couldnt hit my chips and puts out of my way around the green though..... It easily cost me 12 to 14 stableford points.


I know what i will be working on for the next few weeks.
