Driver awareness course.

Never done one and dont intend to, I'll take my points and fine, put me in a room full of idiotic boy racers and I might end up like Bronson and never come back out again!!

You'd be surprised Robin.
When I attended mine, the bulk of the participants were middle aged women.
I find it difficult to comprehend how they could be caught speeding though, with all those lovely frock shops to look at while they drive through the high street. Surely they'd want to drive slowly????

Trouble is though Jus that if you went on the course just to reduce your premuim on your insurance. Chances are that nowt will sink in.

my grief is that there are a lot of causes of deaths on the rd, drinking, drugs, phones, reckless etc etc. But there are no courses for this. The bit where just being a few miles over can kill did sink in a bit wi tash.

I went solely for the purpose of 'insurers will not know' .....i admit it! However it's hard for bits not to sink in as its hard hitting and you would have to close your eyes and ears not to see/hear the message. A bit like adverts with the same message - it does have the effect it is suppose to, perhaps inadvertently.

But do not be misled - insurers know (check the multiple threads on the net) and it's treated the same way as 3 points/fine. Do not go if, like me, you think you can escape the insurance hike. No longer works. Go if you want the education - it is interesting

There's a world of difference between deliberately exceeding the limit and, as in my case, freewheeling downhill & inadvertently letting the speed increase to 34mph.

Can you honestly say that you have never done something like that. If you can, we'll done, Mary Poppins.

I have had one fine [for speeding] in 45 years driving.
I thought I was on a by pass in a 40 mph zone and it was 30.
I was totally embarrassed by my careless action and certainly took more care in the future.

I did not go greeting to anyone or cry out 'it's not fair'.

I'd take the points, ive had 12 or so over the years, made no difference to my insurance

I was always under the impression that you could only take a course once within 6years, that's what i was told at mine a few years back - if you got caught again you shouldn't have the option to take another course, you could only have points

I attended a speed awareness course last October....not sure I actually "learned" anything but the course was generally thought provoking and informative.

Whilst I wouldn't have said I was thrashing my car all over the place (a diesel estate isn't really a rally car) before I got caught speeding (34mph through a country village) I have to say that I'm now a lot more restrained in my driving and am a lot more observant of speed limits generally.

Anyone who has been on one DAC and then qualyfies for another should have an instant ban as they still have a total disreguard for their driving standards, other road users and pedestrian welfare.

Er if you get caught speeding again you don't automatically qualify they give you an option.
If you get 12 points you do not automatically get banned.
If you get caught using a phone it's six points. And a big fat fine. Why not a driver awareness course.
Think a total disregard for other road users and pedestrians is a bit 8 mph over the speed limit.
If you go on the course, as enlightening as it is, the signs, repeaters etc etc re speed limits is still a bit 1940,s

So why so many times? Ive had a clean driving licence for the past 30 years and even spent 6 of those years driving as a proffession.

Think the criteria is you are offered a course if it has been 3 years since your last course, but this is at the discretion of the police force involved.

I went on a course about 3 years ago, cost me £100, (more than the £60 fine) I avoided the 3 points but the insurance company (Admiral) pounced on it like a bee on a honey pot. I was doing 34 in a 30 before anyone asks.

No obviously not, but I wasn't doing 70 in a 30, which I have witnessed,
Where were the coppers when that happened?

So Shivas, you've never exceeded the speed limit then, must be true as you are being very holier than thou.

Its quite simple Phil they give you a number and you dont exceed it.

Oh the holier than I attitude displayed on here at times is so funny. We have so many purists on here it's staggering.

Oh to live a whiter than white life, I'm a dirty grey 😜

Speed limits are maximum speeds - there's no law says you can't drive below the limit but there are laws that say you must not drive above. Vehicles collide with stuff and going faster will increase the damage/injuries when it happens as the DACs are supposed to get across!!

Young people's accident rates are falling as they realise the impact on the cost of their insurance of mistakes - perhaps the so-called mature adults might learn a thing or two

There's plenty of technology available to remind of the current limit so no excuses. However, if you know better or think your Gods gift to motoring then drive as fast as you like but don't whinge if you're caught.

Some of the opinions on here are beyond the pale. I have been driving 30 plus years and estimate that 99% of drivers break the speed limit. You only have to drive 29 in a 30, 39 in a 40 etc to see what happens. The cars in front pull away, those behind pile up behind you as if you have stopped. Like it or loathe it - it's just the way it is. This is hardly the place to discuss why that is.

This is well known and accepted by all the authorities. It is the very reason why there is a 'discretion' over the specified limited where the police usually leave you alone. Exceptions to every rule. 34 in a 30......45 in a 40 is not the problem - get real! Its those travelling 90/100 up the motorways....those doing 60 in a 30 that needs to be addressed. Too much holy than now

I'm sure Imurg or Blue in Munich can clarify, but I'm sure you can fail your test for driving too slow (Speed minus) and I think you can also be done once you've passed for driving too slow as you become a hazard, not sure what the wording of the offence is.
