Draw or Fade!

Aim at a bunker?.

Oh dear me, no.

I go with the hold-off method for the fade. Keep the left hand ahead and restrict the release of the hands.

I actually wrote aim left of the bunker and clubface at the bunker.
Maybe for an experienced single figure golfer, the hold off method may work. But as the OP is new to the game off 19, as I said this method is a good starting point.

The trouble is, most mid to high h/caps swing out to in anyway so would find it very difficult to hit it straight or with a push draw.
But for those with a fairly straight swing...
I find the old school teaching to be a good starting point but just allow for a bit more turn. If it's a fade, aim the body left of the left bunker and point the clubface at the bunker.
That way, it should start at the bunker and float nicely onto the green.
That avoids having to try and manipulate the clubface or swing path.

With no disrespect to JoUK ;) for taking the time to reply to my own post and everybody elses replies i went to the range tonight and from reading Bob's post above iv tried it this way and it seems to work fine for me.Mind you it started off a bit scary but after 30 or so balls i was ironing out the creases a little...Maybe because my natural shape is a fade....... I just got a little confused with all the other posts on the different variances of how to hit these shots.

Someone once gave my 2 shovels and told me to take my pick :D

Glad you've worked it out and have fun experimenting. :)

One last thing.
If you're trying to fade a shot that is normally a 7 iron...hit a 6 as it goes less distance and obviously the opposite for a draw, switch from a 7 to and 8 as it goes further. :)

I'm not offended. It was a long winded conversation about the ball starts wherever the clubface points, and the swingpath sticks a bit of spin on the ball :D

I find that knowing the facts has helped my game tremendously... I used to try and hit a draw with a clubface that was effectively pointing left of the target!

.... next week I hope to break 100.

..... not sure about the back 9 though ;)

Im doing this at the moment thats why im im trying take in the facts alone.......My playing partners think im mad as im wrecking there heads about how to hit this shot and that shot......Im keeping things to myself lately though as i seem to be bothering them with questions that they clearly cant answer......
Thats the advantage of being a forummer. :D :D
There loss.
Iv just got to get my learning cap on now and have them in awe of me on the course one day. :D :D

That is incorrect, the ball starts where the swing path is pointing and the club face imparts spin on the ball so that the ball finishes roughly where the clubface was pointing at impact.
Understanding this cause and effect would help many people.

So your saying that a draw flies two clubs further than a fade???

I think if iv understood things properly here Cookie is that what bob is saying is that a draw will always travel further than a fade hence the club change....Just because its an Iron shot doesnt mean that a draw will fly any less If your hitting a normal 7 iron 150 then with the draw it will travel that extra 10 or 15 yards so hence the change to an 8 and vice verse for a fade...

Am i right Bob?

Actually, the new understanding is exactly the opposite. The ball starts off in a line according to the face angle, and ends up in a place determined by swing path.

The version you describe was the gospel for years until recently when high speed photography proved otherwise. The PGA of America have changed their instruction manuals as a result.

On the distance thing, a draw makes the club stronger, a fade weaker, hence the difference in distance.

Did you actually READ any of the thread?

Don’t believe everything you here, this new thinking is bulshit and they and you are talking out of your arses which is exactly where I should put my foot lol
I could prove the old theory is correct with 3 shots on the range.
I have a good understanding of physics and golf, have a degree in physics and play off 8.
Typical bloody yanks!!!

I have 10 degrees in physics and play off +8!

I am also the man on the moon!

Wow, a degree in physics AND a 8 handicap. Sure you don't want to change your username to Einstein Woods?

Having a degree in something, and having a good understanding of the subject matter do not necessarily go together these days. Edukashion, eh?

You will need some space age photography and impact pictures, though. I am an 8 handicapper, and on any 3 shots, I can prove a lot that appears to defy the laws of physics.

LOL, actually you CAN prove it with only one shot!

I've proved it to other people, and anyone can try this and prove it to themselves!

You have to scroll down for it though.....

I made a 10-foot putt like this much to the amazement of my playing partner, I actually aimed it an inch outside right and hit it pretty firm and in she flew.

If swing path were the gauge then it should have shot off 45° to the right....with a touch of draw :D

Try it...... DO IT AT PARTIES if you must ;)

I don't go to the same sorts of parties as you, obviously!

Nevertheless, nice proof!

Aim at a bunker?.
Oh dear me, no.

Ooooh, one of my favourite topics!

I aim at left hand bunkers all the time (my feet/alignment that is) with 3 and 5 woods......

You wouldn't catch me doing it with any other clubs though...

:) :D
