"down grading" would you do it?

Morning all

haven't picked up a club in 3 1/2 weeks but finally managed to get some range time last night.... bit rusty at first but did ok.

I've been toying with the idea of down grading from my current irons (Nike vr pro combo cbs) to a GI iron for a little while as I've been struggling a bit lately to keep my scoring standard wwhere it was a year ago.

A mate grabbed a g25 7 iron out of the demo bag last night and I hit a few balls.... They really are forgiving aren' they?! Very nice club. Any who. ... AG would give me £200 as a part ex on my clubs.....

what do you think? Is that a good deal.... should I go back and try and g25 again and maybe another set of GI irons?

I wouldn't see it as "downgrading". Just get clubs that you like that work for you. If you hit the Pings better and you think they will enable you to enjoy your golf more and the price is right then it would be a pretty sensible way to go in my view.

Nothing 'downgrade' about going to more forgiving irons! If you are not hitting the current irons well enough, then do so by all means - anything to make the game easier and more enjoyable!

Though I'm not sure I could look at the PW if it's still like the one from the G15s my mate had. I'm sure I couldn't miss-hit it though!

I may be sacrificing some shot flexibility - matching the golfer! - but part of my satisfaction is the feel my irons give me, whether well struck (normally) or not.

A friend of mine had nike bladey type clubs which he hit ok, he's currently trying out some ap2's and they seem to be working very well for him, so he's kind of in a similar situation to you (although not as GI as your talking about)

I see no shame in it, why make golf harder for yourself I say

do it mate! I went to the irons i have from some smaller taylormades best thing i ever did! why make the game harder than it needs to be!

I went the other way and I wouldn't change back. For me, it depends what your bad shot is; I tend to push right or shank bad shots and also thin some. For these issues, more forgiving clubs did nothing that helped me as I wasn't making off centre hits; it was more swing/face path issues and complete shanks.

I also like the workability of my Nike vr pro irons as I can get them to stop / draw / fade much better.

Bought G25's last year as swing changes weren't going so well and wanted more forgiveness and of all the irons I tried they were the best. Didn't see it as downgrading, just finding the right tools for the job. My only issue with them came from the chunky top line on the short clubs which got in my head and gave me no confidence over the ball. Decided to go for the I25's instead and now got the best of all worlds. Smaller head and still plenty of forgiveness.

I like the G25 a lot though aside from my own issues with aesthetics. I would look on it as a positive move not a backward step

Not sure if this would be classed as a ‘downgrade’ but for years I have been using a mixed set of CB’s and MB’s from titleist. Ever since the 735.cm irons I have ordered sets of 2-6 in cb and 7-pw in mb’s right up to the 712’s.

Ive never been a great ball striker but when I was on they were great, but when, like most of the time, the swing wasn’t quite there, I lost distance / control / feel etc. At the beginning of this year I decided to have a look at the 714 AP2’s. If they are good enough for the likes of Zach Johnson and Jason Duffner, then they’ll be good enough for a 6 handicaper.

I love them, still not a great ball striker (I am having lessons, I know its not just the clubs!) but times when you swing the club and you know yourself it wasn’t a good swing, but the ball still gets out there, that’s when theyre great! Fantastic feel of them too, as well as great distance. I should have looked at ‘downgrading’ years ago!!

I went from Titleist AP2's to Callaway Hot X2 irons, so that would definitely be considered a wrong direction move and many here advised me against it. What I get now on 3 or 4 shots in a round, that the forgiving nature and bigger sweet spot of the Callaways give, is a shot that is vastly better than the AP's were capable of in the same situation. I can also button a 4 iron now, but I haven't noticed any down sides and, club for club, the Callaways are longer than the Titleist.

Go for it I'd say

cheers for the replies guys....I never know if I'm being a drama queen on this stuff and occasionally need putting back in my box with a shot of reality (which I've seen dished our here on a couple of occasions)........ I'll mosey on down there and hit some clubs and see whats what.....

time for new shineys

At the end of the day, why make the game harder for yourself? If GI irons work, then go for it!

Man up you great pussy and learn to play the game with proper mans clubs......;)*

* Not my actual thoughts but everyone else has given very sage advice, so I thought I'd offer a ridiculous counterpoint.

I went from Ping i15's to AP1 712's and it's been a very positive move with more accuracy and consistency.

Too many people upgrade too early or use irons that are detrimental to their game

Sort of done something similar myself at the top end of my bag. My Orka driver is great when I put my best swing on it but I have not been doing that much recently as I am not getting to hit that many balls. I have reverted to a 12 degree driver with a regular shaft that is more forgiving when my swing gets a bit iffy. Looking forward to the first comp I can use it in.

I'm currently in the process of 'downgrading'. Last year I got a large handicap drop and treated myself to the irons and rescues in my sig. I got them at a good price. I've hit them well and they feel lovely but I'm not getting the help I need in the long iron area with the stiffer shafts. A playing partner of mine got hold of a lovely set of TM RAC LT irons from 4-SW including AW that has just been regripped with Golf Pride £7 at time grips. I've got them and they feel superb! I can hit the long irons, the wedges sit like God and I just got the 60 deg wedge for £20. The lot has cost me £100 all in.
I'm so impressed, all my Wishon stuff is for sale.

You've got to be honest with yourself, is it pride or ego that says you should be playing with players clubs rather than SGI irons. Off a 20 handicap you want all the help you can get. I play with plenty of members that let pride get in the way, making the game harder for themselves by using equipment that isn't suited to there game.
I'm more impressed by a high handicapper playing the right gear, than one playing the wrong gear and struggling by.
