Don't you love terrible range sessions that knock your confidence?

Must be something in the air... had similar myself yesterday.

Week off work - course waterlogged so went there to keep my hand in having had a great round last week.

Terrible session, couldn't drive for toffee, chipping went south and the guy in the bay next to me was grunting like Serena Williams. I am sure if I was doing OK I would not have noticed how animated he was but after 45 mins and feeling like I needed a drink to wet my throat I had to go.

The pro at the driving range said a common thing for golfers is to slice and shank on the range, even if their results are good on the course or ranges with soft mats.

It is due to the hard mat laid on concrete and a slightly flat swing with an iron combining to bounce the club as it hits the deck just before the ball. It does not happen on softer mats or on the course ans the iron can go under the ball easily and does not get forced open and out from the body.

My last range session was after work, I hit 50 balls fine, 20 pitches and then shanked my way to the end of the 100 ball bucket.

The reason was I was getting tired and my iron swing became shallow, my head started lagging behind the ball at impact.

It happens to me at one particular range that has thin hard mats on concrete but not on the course or at my clubs range.

To buck the trend a little I hit the range tonight and was pleasantly surprised by how well the majority were going. Frustratingly the driver remains an enigma but the irons were very good. Of course in the greedy tomorrow it'll be the usual gash but at least for tonight I bore a resemblance to a golfer
