Don't understand handicap system

Hi all,can someone explain :my friend had eight best scores out of twenty(which is the norm)but when he adds up is handicap is lower than he expected!!!!!!!!he isn't complaining but we are not sure how it works ?
his scores were 23.7-23.6-23.7-23.7-22.9-23.0-23.9-14.6 =179.1 divided by 8 =22.38 he was given 22.3(norm would have been 22.4)
then the next round he dropped the 14.6 and got replaced by 24.5 giving him a total of 189.0 divided by 8 =23.62 he was given 23.0
These were all played at the same course.

The app only shows to one decimal place, but the algorithm deals in many more. With lots of those 8 rounded up, its entirely possible that 22.3 is the index.

I don't necessarily have the answer - but it's worth checking the score differential for all 20 scores. It could be that whatever was showing as the best 8, might not in fact be the best 8. This has happened to both me and a friend. On one occasion I had differentials of 1-7, and 9 highlighted as the best 8. For some reason #8 wasn't highlighted (but it was included in the actual calculation.

Sounds like the soft cap is in effect, restricting increases higher than 3 above their low index in the last 12 months.

Are you quoting his gross scores? If so that is not what is divided by 8 to give an average.

The calculation uses the differential which is worked out using slope and course rating too.

(113/slope rating) x (gross score - course rating). This means that the differential is slightly lower than your gross score.

Gross scores would be integers. These are decimal values.

I believe the answer is in Post No4 by wjemather. It sounds very much like the soft cap limit has been exceeded, thus reducing any additional amount above this by half.
