Does your club pro shop sell second-hand clubs and take trade-ins or part exchange?

Ours doesn't, which I have found frustrating at times both due to wanting to try something different or trading in something I'm not getting on with.

We don't even have a general notice board to sell second-hand items that could benefit others and as our pro doesn't sell them, what's the conflict of interest!

As such when you have something to sell to another member its all cloak & dagger and done from the back of the boot in the car park, surely that's not right.

I think a lot of our members (men) would think better of our pro and go into the shop more if he accepted there is a market for S/H clubs. It certainly looks more clothing driven and has definitely more items for the ladies than the gents!

When I was briefly at another club he had a few bags full of S/H clubs that he had taken in part exchange and that area was always busy! Also, at a local range which has a large retail area there is wall full of S/H trade-in clubs and again its always very busy.

I think we all use our pro shop for the odd last minute purchase or for a club sweater or shirt but other than that I would think his sales come from the ladies more.

Can a pro be in a comfort zone with his retainer and lessons revenue and not listen to the needs or wants of the membership?

Is he missing a trick and how does your pro & shop compare.

Our pro is known as "the rhino", thick skinned and charges a lot. A lot of the older members dont seem to have many good words for him.

personally, he did me a good deal on gg's,
A couple of weeks ago took i swapped my old k15 and £90 for a g20 driver,i thought was a good deal, which he sold on ebay for £85,
Hes like a car dealer , "its how much its costs to swap"!!!!!!!
currently in negotiatons over my razr x's against i20's and hes showing his thick skin!!

Recently bought a new putter and part exchanged my old one for £45, it only cost £60 two years ago so not a bad deal.

They have bags of 2nd hand clubs so must do a decent trade. It's a good service to offer I think.

My pro doesn't do it regularly as he finds it hard to shift. He tends to go for new makes (R11, G20). He doesn't carry that many new models as it's a private members club and to be honest after 20 odd years he's found that there isn't a huge demand. He does have a fitting cart if you want to get fitted but prefers to arrange for members to go direct to Ping, Cally, Titleist etc

Re: Does your pro shop take clubs in part exchange & sell-on those used clubs?

Our pro does trade in's and has a very good stock of new gear and second hand drivers, woods etc. Always up for a deal.

Can't understand why your pro doesn't do trade in's he's really losing out on business and appears lazy. I know pro's who do trade in's and sell the club on to golfbidder or as others have posted why doesn't he stick it on eBay. If he can't be bothered to help you then why help him - shop elsewhere.......

Pro shop at Muckhart is pretty well stocked with new and some used kit. 90% of it seems to be Ping, dont know why. But he does some pretty good trade in offers.
Noticed a sign that said £50 for your old driver whatever make/model against a new RBZ at £199 which is a good deal I reckon.

Re: Does your pro shop take clubs in part exchange & sell-on those used clubs?

Our shop offers to sell for you and put the money on your account. He was taking trade ins and would occasionally on very new stuff, but too much second hand stuff built up and much of it is still there.
I can see his point that it becomes dead money.

He does do some great deals though. 1 guy just bought a GG full Goretex suit for £299.
Another got 2 Titleist hybrids and Titleist cart bag for £320.

A little off topic but I gave Direct golf a call to see what they would give me for my TM RBZ driver. I'm not really bothered about changing driver but I was going to give the R11S a whack...

The club is as new...

Trade in price...

£36 whole English pounds!!!

Shocking!!!

Ours is exactly the same,
My mate asked about putting up a notice to sell a set of junior clubs,Pro said he is the only person allowed to sell clubs ?

Our pro does. As long as its something he can sell on, not prehistoric! I bought a burner 2.0 driver on a whim and having had it for 2 weeks he put it up for sale in his shop for whatever I wanted for it.... If it didn't sell, he said he would just use golfbidder....

Re: Does your pro shop take clubs in part exchange & sell-on those used clubs?

Ours doesn't and he doesn't stock anything you'd really want new either.

Can't post 2nd had stuff on notice board as it offends the pro! So again its word of mouth car boot selling in the car park!

This attitude seems to be more widespread than I first thought!

We're obviously at the other end of the spectrum. Ours will take trade-in if he can get a price on golfbidder; if not he will sell it for you. It's not a huge shop. He sells Titleist, Ping and Benross clubs. Does price matching with genuine online prices for members. Thoroughly good egg and nice chap with it.

Maybe he knows his market, and 2nd hand stuff doesn't sell? What if ladies clothes sell better than mens?

Maybe the pro is totally switched on and you're wrong?

Re: Does your pro shop take clubs in part exchange & sell-on those used clubs?

I may be alone in thinking this but to my mind second hand gear may be the way forward for a lot of pro shops. If the mark up on new clubs is poor or the pro cannot compete with internet prices then second hand gear may be a way forward. The pro can control the mark up as he can dictate what he pays and what he sells for. Also, the one thing that most online retailers cannot offer is trade in so golfers are willing to pay a little more in a pro shop for being able to get rid of the old club at the same time.

I am not sure that our pro shop deals in second hand gear but I look at the situation and think that I am more likely to spend some cash on a second hand bargain than I am to pay over the odds for new kit.

Re: Does your pro shop take clubs in part exchange & sell-on those used clubs?

If you're going to get a better price selling it yourself - via the boot of your car/ebay/golfbidder/etc - then why bother asking your pro for a trade in? Just sell the club you no longer need then take the sale money to your pro and buy what you wanted to trade for!

clothes sell more regularly and last longer before they're out of date - we all know the shelf life of a TM driver - but a club sweater won't be upgraded for years!

Re: Does your pro shop take clubs in part exchange & sell-on those used clubs?

80% of the time I see people wanting to trade in its because they have cheap tat, that will never sell. Anyone with decent gear for sale know they can shift on EBay or to mates(mates of mates) for more.
