Does your club do internet booking.

Yes, we have internet booking and a rapidly improving club website. I think it's often a case of someone on the committee being motivated enough and computer savvy enough to get it done (or at least get someone in to do it).

It always strikes me as madness when a club has no way of booking a tee time but, from previous threads on the subject, I have learned that plenty of people like it that way. Wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me but I would have serious reservations about joining a club where I couldn't book a tee time.

I wouldn't join a club who had no online booking system for comps and social golf

All things being even I'd agree, but I'd possibly overlook it if the club ticked all the other boxes for me. However, the ability to book a time for comps, with or without a partner, is a must-have but doesn't necessarily need to be over the internet.

I guess quite a few clubs operate that way (judging by their websites) and maybe another reason they don't have a booking system

While well meaning, rarely are they skilled enough to present a decent quality job and adding a booking system may well be beyond them

One day these may see the benefit in having a professional deal with their online activities

I always find this an interesting debate.

I'm a member of 2 clubs that have both systems. My home club book 8 days in advance, there is always a scramble to book as people are in 'panic mode' and scared they won't get a time. There are always quite a few no-shows and tee times go to waste.

My away club only books in advance for competitions. I have NEVER had to wait longer than a couple of groups to get off, even on a Saturday. Due to the nature of my work, I can't plan my golf 8 days in advance so sometimes I have to book a time then cancel at short notice which then deprives another member who has made alternative arrangements.

If I did have to hang around for a while before teeing off then I wouldn't consider time spent at the golf club as wasted time. Always people on the putting green to chat to and enjoy their company.

As I said earlier, I'm not against on-line booking but if its introduction prevented our swindle operating in broadly the same way it does, then I'd have reservations. The social aspect of weekend morning swindle is a key part of weekend club life. If it could accommodate it, fine, why not .

As regards queuing in the absence of a booking system, for the most part, the only people doing so are the swindle folk themselves - they do it by choice and is part of the experience/format. And I can't recall people queuing behind the swindle - even when it's a big turn-out. And given we can use two of three start points, even a big turn out gets off within half hour max. Nor can I say I'm aware that those who want to play in their regular 2, 3 or 4 ball outside of a swindle have to wait much. I suspect the fact we have 3 starting points helps. Seems like most members have gravitated to the time that suits them and everyone is happy. The only issue that grates, is when they close the first tee at ludicrous times for club matches - which is happening too frequently.

Ps: we have a sign up sheet for (most) comps.

Our club has an on-line booking system and it's great. You can book up to three consecutive tee times for a group of friends, 7 days in advance, and more than this by agreement with the pro shop, so swindles etc still OK. It is still usually possible to walk onto the course if you avoid peak times and competitions. :)

booking is OK, if roll ups have dedicated times within this. We have a half booked, half roll up and it works OK, but only because it's a really busy midweek club, less so at weekends. If I've booked nothing for a Sat I can guarantee rolling up around 1pm on a Sat, non comp day, and pretty much walking straight on.

It falls down in 2 areas. Firstly, people book up tees times (same time) every week & don't always use them. This is abusing the system & should be clamped down on.

Also this time of year, because of x2 roll ups and other block bookings, if I wanted to play midweek, there are maybe 4 times a day available
