Does This Give The Right Impression

Was playing with my regular group on Friday and one had brought a guest up to sign in and play. There was a comp so out of one of our 3 balls, 2 were in the comp and the guest was playing alongside in a friendly stapleford. We pay our comp fees and the guest pays his money then the assistant pro decides to comment about whether the guest should be allowed to play off the white tees with the rest of us. He decides that the white tees are for members only and the guest should play off the yellows. It was only after some persuasion and an argument about playing off 2 different tees would slow down play (as well as ruin our round) that he eventually conceded that our guest could play off the whites with us. This really left a bitter taste as I had never seen guests at our club treated any differently to members. You should also bear in mind that one of our group had brought with him 2 applications for new members from people who had previously come up as guests and had decided to become full time members.

I am really starting to have second thoughts about whether I am at the right club if that is their attitude.

Depends on the rule at the club. I know a lot of clubs let Members play off any tee but Visitors from the "Tee of the Day" - quite often Yellows. It's their Bat'n'Ball after all.
I'd have got him to pay off yellows on the first or any other tee insight and then play off the whites anyway...

Surprised that guests can play when there is a Club Competion is being played. Surley the Comp would take precedence with allocated slots and players' would have already been drawn with partners for the day.

Not all courses work that way.

Not sure why the assistant pro's opinion should either be sought or even matter at all. You shouldn't ask the question if you think you may dislike the answer.

The opinion was not asked for. We all paid then the assistant pro suddenly said 'hold on a minute' and brought up the subject.

As for guests not playing whilst others are in a comp, there is no issue with that at the club. Comps are not drawn and tee times are not booked, you just pitch up and play. It is not unusual for there to be mixed groups with some in the comp and some not.

Playing of the same tees is surely most sensible option. It allows the 3 of you to have a more enjoyable social aspect to the round playing together, does not slow pace of play and has no impact on the score cards for the 2 entering the comp.

Why make life more complicated than it has to be? And what's more worrying is that this was raised AFTER money changed hands. If it was a consideration at all then it should have been discussed before payment so you could decide what you wanted to do - i.e. pay and play or walk out and play somewhere else!

I agree with Bobmac, Im not sure I'd want to be a member of a club who didnt have the flexibility to play with friends. Doesnt make any difference at all whether 1,2, 3 or all 4 of a 4 ball play in the comp or not.

I went round last week, we had an unofficial 4 ball match, 1 of whom was in the comp, the 3 of us werent. Just meant he had to hole out on everything and we didnt. No big deal at all.

I would have thought if you'd paid your money you would automatically become a member for the day anyway. I dont see a prob playing off the whites or with 2 others in a comp , they can mark each others cards without any fuss.

Totally agree.
It is a hobby after all. A way of getting some peace and quiet out with a few mates on a nice day.

Whilst I can appreciate both sides of the argument here, I still think it was a bit silly for someone to bring a guest along when they knew there was a competition on the go.

As to the Tees and where to play... does it really make a difference

It is difficult to avoid bringing guests on competition days as there is one on at least one day of every weekend and sometimes both.

I suppose that my point is that the first words from the club to the est basically emphasise that he is not viewed in the same was as a member or the people he is playing with and generally made him feel awkward at least and possibly unwelcome

What's the clubs stance on Yellow and White Tees on a normal day ? Do you get to play off the whites when you are not playing in a comp ?

When we sign guests in at my place they play on whatever tees we want to go off. No quibble. The only thing is we have to be in three or fourballs for comps and they have to all be members. Just the rules so if I'd wanted to bring my mate up like the OP I couldn't have gone in the comp. Pays your money and makes your choice

During the season, we have Whites (competition only), Blues (members), Yellows (Visitors) and Reds (Ladies). Members guests can play off the Blues with their hosts. Not come across the issue with mixed groups. I suspect that it would be a case of "what the eye can't see the heart can't grieve over."

can't have just 1 in the comp surely? or do you have to designate a marker?

id be humiliated if my guests were treated in this manor, more importantly would the club members sec be happy to find he's just lost two possible new members and the risk of losing an outstanding member.

Suggesting the guest plays off different tee's would have slowed play, broke the game up and more importantly the guest would want to play the course from the whites to appriciate it if he was going to join surely?
