Do you choose to play off the yellows.....

White tees are reserved for competitions and matches only at my course so it is the yellows only for bounce games. Real pity as I would rather practice off the whites for competitions and the white tees are always marked so as people can play knockout matches etc. I can understand the desire to maintain condition etc but we have pretty big tee boxes in places and some separate tee boxes if the course is set up at its longest so I personally cannot see the harm.

With only 88 yards between yellow and white total distance it makes no difference at my place.
Only 1 hole, the 10th - a par 3 that extends from 160 to 182, has a difference that would make you change your club. Other differences are...
3,2,2,3,3,4,5,3,4,4,4,8,4,4,4,4,5...

Sometimes there can be a club or 2 difference, eg when the Whites are at the back of the box and the yellows on the front - can be 30 yards but I'd a par 5 so you're going to hit the same club regardless.
We generally only use the Whites for Comps but, as I said, it makes so little difference it's nothing to get excited about.

I really enjoy playing golf, no matter where I'm playing from, it usually depends on the people I'm playing with, for instance I've recently played with a few people from my Uni that are only taking up the game so we've played off forward tees to make it a bit easier for them

On the basis that it's your short game that could do with the most practice and which probably governs most peoples' scores, you'll be better playing off the front blues and practising your short game more than insisting on playing your long irons in during practice rounds, given that's generally what most people practice at the range.

Always off the whites, if I want my handicap to lower theirs no point playing off the yellows

Never play off the yellows out of choice, and really hate society games which make me do so. Haven't played off the yellows at Bearwood Lakes in about 3 or 4 years.

Why play in society games then?

You really mean you "hate" a round of golf only because you're playing off yellow tees!?

Depends, in match play i like it when the bunkers are at least 240/250yds from the tee just short of my drives yippee !.

I also like 470yds par 4s where even middle distance forum hitters struggle to catch in 2 and their left just a tad short, and me with a full p/ w or 9.

In stroke play i prefer shorter courses, where i have a slight chance of catching G.I.R. and on a good day 2 putt max .Dream on.lol.

Play off the yellows on the Medal unless it's the weekend then it's whites - on the shorter Ashludie there are only whites for men.

If I'm playing holiday golf and there's a choice of tees then I'll play off the tees that give me the best experience of the course, which to me is those which give me a decent chance of carrying any trouble to the fairway.

The White tees at our club are reserved for players with a handicap of 24 or less as well as for all competitions. The reasoning is to keep things moving on the course with the highest handicap players using the shorter tees. There is over 500 yards difference between the yellow and whites so its like having an additional par5 distance to cover.

That is a damn goods point there sir.

Although the total distance at ours is about 460yds, it's only really a couple of holes that make a big difference. The first goes from 229 to 163, the 17th from 218 to 176 and the 18th from 531 to 442 which is nearly half of the total difference just on those 3 holes. The other 15 holes it really doesn't make that much difference.

Agree this is the one big benefit I find of playing off front tees from time-to-time - more opportunity to play (and practice) my medium-short iron approaches whilst still playing the hole properly. BIG difference between Whites and Yellows on at least four of our harder holes round our place - and it isn't just extra yardage that makes the tee shot off a back tee more challenging.

Surely depends upon how you view and use your casual play as preparation and/or practice for qualifiers. I truth I'd rather play off yellows more than I do. More chance to practice approach irons in a round (rather than just chucking a ball down) and more chance of a below handicap round and that always boosts my confidence.

Also off yellows some hazards defined for bigger hitters play from the white tee come into play - and so off yellow they are in play and I have to think a bit more about my tee shot

I prefer playing off the whites as playing off the blues at ours means walking further to the tees. ;)

Blues are only available in monthly medals and comps anyway, whites are for extra medals and general play. It doesn't bother me what tees I play from but I prefer the whites as I'm not the biggest hitter (no 350 drives here) and the whites are a decent, enjoyable challenge for me. No qualms playing from the back when visiting if that's what the group wanna do, although I'm usually hoping the starter tells us they're out of commission that day! :D

everyone shooting under par off the easy peasy yellows? splendid !

At my place it is more that the whites can involve different shots to the yellows. There are a few holes where you can cut the corner over trees. On some the yellows make that shot difficult as they are too near and I cannot get the height in time, on others the whites make the carry too far. I enjoy playing off either but I just feel that the chance to practice more off the white tees would give me better preparation for when it comes to competitions.

Everyone shoots under par then the CSS comes down to reflect that situation. I just think of playing off the yellows as playing a slightly different - and 350yd shorter - course. Still one that is 6268yds so not a dawdle and one that on some holes allows me to try different shots and think about the holes in a slightly different way.
