do you buy music anymore or just download free (legitimately of course)

I've become a dinosaur, half of the above is in another language. And if your spotified, by some Clearasil

Never agreed with picking up "free" music. I always buy from iTunes as it syncs with all my devices. Got £70 worth of vouchers for my Christmas so have been on a bit of a download frenzy.

Kendrick Lamar
Lumineers
Radiohead's OK computer
Swedish house mafia
Black keys
Foals

Bit of a mixed bag but should keep my lugs happy for a bit.

I used to always buy CDs and have a stack of them. Used to listen to music primarily at home via my surround sound system and the DVD player. Since becoming more mobile with music and using my phone I don't see the point in buying the CD any more. Especially as I can download on the phone via amazon or other places if I wish. Because I have a Samsung TV and a Samsung phone I can play the music via it at home without any hassle with cables.

I have been naughty with a few CD's I own which I could be bothered ripping so I just acquired them else where direct via the phone. I will always supports the artists I like by buying their music in some form though.

I always buy it, for no other reason than I love owning music (if that makes sense.....)

I went into HMV a while back and asked them where their CD singles were. The girl told me that very few artists release their songs on CD single any more, it's all digital download. I'd either have to buy the album or visit ebay if I wanted it on CD single.

I left the shop feeling very sad and very old! :temper:

I buy all my music via iTunes. Last three albums I bought were all by Porcupine Tree.

Impeccable taste sir!

I'd love to buy CDs (I have over 500 albums that I've bought over the years), but don't have the space any more, so tend to buy from iTunes. Got £50 in iTunes vouchers for xmas, so bought both albums by Work of Art, Coheed and Cambria's latest, pre-ordered Guster's new live CD, and will be pre-ordering Killswitch Engage's new album when it's available. I tend to listen mostly on my iPod/iPad and Mac, generally via bluetooth to my Jambox speaker (which I cannot recommend highly enough btw!) so have no real need for CDs, but I love my collection.

I've got a Jam speaker too. Fantastic wee bit of kit for the money.
As an aside, I've recently bought Porcupine Trees live 'Arriving Somewhere' and 'Anesthatize' DVD's - well worth tracking down.

Got to say it depends. Always loved owning CD's and never bothered with an MP3 player that was until i got around to owning an iPhone 4S.

Then when I started connecting the phone to carbvia Bluetooth and was able to play virtually unlimited tracks without having to change a disk while driving I stopped buying CDs. I probably still have a couple of hundred all (sadly) alphabetised in a floor to ceiling rack in my spare room. I also have in the centre of it pride of place an actual Brit award won by Reef, which was given to me by a friend that worked at universal records.

But now if I get iTunes vouchers for birthdays or Christmas I spend those on downloads and make playlists for the car, gym, walk to work and train if I don't drive, as well as chilled out ones for sticking on in bed to drift off to if I can't sleep.

Just last night spent some iTunes vouchers on an array of things from Plan B's albums The defamation of Stricklan Banks and Ill Manors, bought Stone Roses greatest hits, Beatles 1's, Michael Bubles Crazy Love and Professor Greens latest album. I have a bizarre range of music I'll listen to anything except thrash metal really.

But I do know my lady friend has a habit of converting YouTube clips to mp3 which she can sync with her iTunes, got to say I always moan about it as I've always been one for payin for music no matter what form in comes in.

I'm another Spotify user, but as I have a premium account I can select to download to listen to offline,

Hi Paul. I'm intrigued by Spotify. How does the Premium account work. Is it just like owning the music, i.e. you can download it and then play it anywhere, without the need for either a wi-fi or 3G connection?

Not bought a live music DVD for ages. Saw them on the "Deadwing" tour, so the Arriving Somewhere DVD would be ossum. They are incredible live, if you ever get the chance to see them.

Yes and no. You can only play the music via the spotify app, but you can play the music without an internet connection. I got rid of my premium account as it kept asking me to sync all the time and I would have to keep re-downloading the albums/playlists I'd already flagged as "offline". Was a right PITA.

my kids have free spotify with their phone contracts and are always playing music.

This thread just reminded me to put some new stuff on the ipod for in the motor so great post OP ;)

I use Spotify which is legal. And I also have a program for recording what goes through my sound card, which is also legal. But put together I suspect it is illegal to record stuff off spotify, it's kind of like the 21st century equivalent of taping music off the radio (anyone remember the advertising campaign Home Taping is Killing Music. Well it didn't)

To be honest I mostly listen to podcasts now rather than music if I am driving, and spotify plus my existing record collection satisfies my need for music at other times. And if I desperately did want a new album I would download it from Itunes. Last music I purchased was Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! by Godspeed you Black Emperor. Quality stuff.

No Derek, you don't actually 'own' the music, but it's cached locally so that you can listen to a number of tracks offline (3,333 tracks rings a bell).

Just out of interest what would 70 quid buy you from itunes? I am a classical music buff (I listen to other indie stuff occasionally) and my preferred medium is vinyl so I spend a lot of time trolling the charity shops for LP's to add to my collection, it's fun, gives a hand to charity and saves stuff going to landfill. Win.win for all.
