• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Do we want him back?

I just don't believe Jack had so much competition, he only ever played against (maybe) 5 people and as a result they ended up sharing a lot of honours between them.

I lived through that era and that is a load of tosh.
Remember this is the guy Brian Barnes beat twice in one day in the RC.
Nicklaus had a very long career at the top, playing against Snead, Palmer, Thomson, Casper, Charles, De Vicenzo, Player, Trevino, Jacklin, Miller, Weiskoft, Romero, Watson, Ballesteros, Lyle, Faldo, Woosnam.

Name more than 17 golfers of that quality who have successfully battled against Tiger during his career.

Was that the last day Barnes was sober playing golf?

Tiger in his pomp is great to watch. Not sure about his taste in women though - certainly not mine!

Nicklaus and Watson have been, and will always be, the greatest ambassadors for golf. Tiger will never come close in that regard, but has been responsible for the huge increase in interest, and money, in golf!

I don't believe he'll win The Masters though - but would be pleased to be wrong.

In case it was missed....

Out of interest who has won the most majors in the past 14yrs other than tiger? Has someone else won 4, 5 or 6 since Tiger came on the scene?

Best of his era. But has 'his era' gone? Next year or 2 will tell.

Doesn't make him GOAT though!

And I'm a Tiger fan!

4 each for els and mickelson
3 for Harrington, vijay and Stewart
2 for mcilroy, goosen and cabrera

That's about it r other multiple winners in the tiger "era"

Implying that Tiger has nobody to challenge him..?

Or that he was simply too good. I remember us open in 2001. All this fuss of how low Rory went last year. But woods won it by like 15 shots and was the only one under par. Doesn't matter who's in the field when he's on that form.

Tiger is good for Golf, like Valentino Rossi for MotoGP. He does not have to be winning everything in sight, but he's enough of an icon, a crowd puller and merchandise shifter to be good for the sport overall.

Does he get too much media coverage over the other players? Sometimes he does, especially if the camera operators are American (Italian MotoGP has a lot of air time for its countrymen no matter where they're placed) - however it is players like him that draw crowds and sponsorship allowing the event to happen in the first place.

It's not enough to be number one in the world any more, you have to be marketable as well. If you are marketable you can spend years in the dark with less-than-great results but you'll still hold a good pay cheque if you draw the crowds. This will only last so long however, and Tiger has been lucky enough to have some spikes in his career with more than enough wins to keep the media and sponsorship happy.

As for his career records, love or hate the guy he's played some fantastic golf against a myriad of opponents across a number of years. To play at that level for that amount of time needs a character not everyone will warm to. Golf is his job, for most of us it's our hobby.

I'm happy to watch him, yes.

I'm more than happy for him to be back and looking forward to tonight's final round coverage 2 of my favourite golfers in the last group will be exciting as fowler will as always go for everything and Woods will do what needs to be done and I've no doubt return to world no1 today.

After 54, Tiger Woods is 75th in driving accuracy, 64th in ball-striking and 1st in strokes-gained putting. Drive for show, putt for dough ;)

However, the guy who is currently the GOAT is a hard act to follow. As well as his collection of majors he embodies all that is good in the sport and has done for as long as I can remember. Tiger gets a bad press but is really (personal life excluded) just a little rough around the edges. Trouble is... How do you live up to Jack?

Woods won't, because he can't.
He's courted too much controversy both on and off the course for that to ever happen.
I read somewhere that Woods is the most fined man in golf and it's generally for spitting & swearing.
I know his golf can be sublime, but, I've just never warmed to the guy and I find the coverage he gets on telly is way over the top, it's almost sickening. I also realise that that isn't his fault.

Slime.
