Do I need a sand iron?

I have a PW 46 degree, and a GW 58 degree.

I could definitely do with a 54 or something as some shots are just a bit too much for the 58, but I prefer to do more of a fuller swing than if I used the PW.

I don't currently have a SI (I use my 58)... would I need one if I got a 54 degree wedge?

Thanks!

I would suggest using your 58 as the SW and get yourself a 52 to slip in between the other two

Thanks Bob... is the bounce of the 58 not as effective in the sand as that of a sand wedge? Would I be making my sand shots a little harder by not having a dedicated SW?

Cheers

Not on the front 9 at Etchinghill James, as its clear no one rakes the bunkers! Lol

I had bunker trouble and it became obvious it was the lob wedge that I was using that dug in too much, I bought a 56* Vokey with 14* of bounce and my bunker play improved immediately

Chris

Must have read my mind.

Having just read the Short Game advice and tips book from GM while away on holiday all the advice was to carry one and use it for majority of sand shots

I had just ditched mine for my 58 deg Vokey which seemed to be more effective at getting out of sand for me - have been pondering it all holiday.

Cheers Chris... is there any way of measuring/finding out the bounce on my 58* Vokey?

Normally says on the back doesn't it (58.) The number after the . is the bounce.

Do you regularly visit bunkers? If you do you'll need one;)

Alternatively i use a 58* wedge for my bunker shots.

Good advice from Bobmac as always. I currently have PW, 52 and 58 and they pretty much cover all bases.

So far as bounce is concerned a lot will depend on your bunkers. Most of ours have very little sand in so I recently changed from a 56 with 12 degrees bounce to to a 58 with 8 degrees bounce, which seems to work better. However it did mean practising hitting my 52 gap wedge my old 56 sandwedge distance.

At my course the bunkers regularly have such little sand in them a 60 degree is the best club for me. I do have a 56 degree but rarely use it.

OK just checked, I have a 58* with 8* bounce. I seem to be doing ok with it from the sand so I'll not bother with a SW. I think I will however get a 52* though, as suggested.

Thanks everyone.

To another point I think 49-53 is more a "Gap" or attack wedge and 54-58 is a sand wedge and a 59-64 is a lob wedge. Am I right or does it depend on bounce? Is your 58 low or high bounce? my 56 is 13, my 60 is about 5 and my 52 is 7

To be honest, I don't even know if my 58 is a gap wedge, that's just what the guy called it when he sold it to me ;)

I also don't know if 8* bounce is a lot or a little!

Not much help there, sorry! :)

Just a generalisation, but I'd say GW between 8-12 for general shots, SW 10-14 for bouncing through sand, LW 4-8 for picking off tight lies.

I think my GW=8, SW=10, LW=4
