Hi all,can anyone tell me if besides trying to find a field I can work distances out for irons ,etc ?some say you can do it on the range but don,t know how as ranges are marked 50,100,150,200 balls can drop anywhere between.also I have read on forum and realised range balls are 1 piece so are made not to travel as far.All thoughts welcomed.

Impossible to do at a driving range as the yardages are all wrong to compensate for rubbish balls.

You need to get out on the course one evening when it is quiet, and hit a few balls from the 150 and the 100 yard markers. then work it out from there.

Before I bought a range finder, I used to know what club I could hit from the 150 marker into the green, then add ten yards for every club you go up in the bag.

Bear in mind, your distances are going to be around 10 yards shorter in the cold weather than in the summer

whilst range bals obviously vary I find them a lot closer distance wise than they used to be.

you only need 100 and 150 targets to build a reasoable profile of the carry distances of your irons - change clubs until you establish the ones that hit 100 and 150 consistently.

once you have a profile you can easily adjust it for changing conditions, and this might include changing balls as well.

Go out when its quiet onto a level part of the course and hit balls from a certain spot.

If you don't have a range finder get hold of someone with a Motocaddy S3 digital trolley as that has a yardage meter on it.

Thats the way I do my yardages every 3 months, pretty accurate also.

Ash!!

I would definitely use a rangefinder to check out the yardages of the markers. They are going to vary depending on what bay you use and to be honest none of my ranges have accurately placed 50, 100 or 150 markers even from the bay directly in front of them. I agree that range balls also add a variable. Does your club have a practice ground. Definitely the best place to work them out properly

Like has been said mate, find out what your 150 club is then just go up and down in 10 yard increments to find out what club for which distance. To be honest unless you are a really good ball striker with a consistent swing then the distance you hit the ball can vary from swing to swing anyway. So you need to find out what is your normal 150 yard club not the once and again perfect swing that you can put on it.
