The range I use have taylormade range balls, the yellow ones. Nice balls and actually feel quite good for a range ball.

Just wondering if anyone has an idea what distance you would typically lose using a range ball?

Just trying to work on a bit of distance control so trying to take into account how much extra distance I can expect with a 'proper' ball. Might be a hard question to answer but maybe someone here might have tested it

You need a good memory at my range then - I reckon we have all those + a few more. No knowing how far it's going to go.....

Ours the same, get anything from an old school 1.62 ball (usually dunlop) through various range balls, all the way up to pro V1s in a bucket. Because people tend to drop 3 or 4 balls down and hit them onto the range before playing, the quality of a bucket is actually steadily increasing though :)

There's no set % it varies from range to range, some adjust distance marker to suit as well.
Range only really suited to keep hand in and work on faults.

the best way for distance control is to get yourself some used balls the type you play with and hit the practice ground

it's a really easy one to answer, accurately -

borrow one of these range balls, if you ask nicely they may even give you one, and go play with it on your course.

this will tell you exactly how far it's going, with what clubs, relative to your norm. you may be surprised.

If you pinched (ahem....borrowed) 2 balls from my range you'd get 2 completely different yardages!!

I know of a few clubs that have signs up saying "Anyone found to be using a range ball on the course will be asked to leave"....

Don't know why anyone would use a range ball anyway. I found a Titleist ball once and thought I'd give it a go, was only a mess around game and abit of practice. First shot was my wedge over a bunker and the ball felt absoloutly shocking off the face and really heavy. Picked it up on the green to see the words practice on the side lol now I never knew this before I hit it but I could tell the difference straight away.

From a personal viewpoint does it matter. I don't think ranges are the best place to work on this. Perfect lies and the club skidding off the mat masking less than perfect strikes. I prefer to do my distance control work off grass at the practice ground.

Why not do it the other way around - take a few proper golf balls to the range, not expensive ones obviously, and see how much further they go than the range balls.

Because, at the range I go to, the 18th hole runs along the back - ok it's 70 yards away but if you're downwind and you hit a stonker, with a bit of bounce you can make the fairway with a real ball.

simply no way to establish accurately the carry

if you aren't interested in accurate numbers just 'pick any factor' - personally I don't see why it matters at all.......but others clearly seem to think it's relevant (to something)

If you found a Titleist with 'practice' on it, chances are it was a Pro V1

Here is a quote from Mike D. Team Titleist Manager taken from this webpage (http://www.titleist.com/teamtitleist/team-titleist/f/32/t/2993.aspx)

"Pro V1 Practice golf balls are conforming products that differ only due to a cosmetic blemish such as paint, ink or registration of stamping. Pro V1 Practice golf balls do not have any construction or performance deficiencies."

Afraid to tell you but something else was to blame. That's if it was a Pro V practice. They will have all the usual stamping on them plus the practice.

On a plus point it means you can quiet happily buy them and get a premium ball without a premium price tag.

Our club range borders a fairway, separated by a high hedge but occasionally really good slices (RH) or hooks (LH) go over the hedge onto the range. As a result we get a few 'proper' balls in every bucket of range balls. Generally, the Top Flites and Donnays etc do not seem to play differently to the range balls but the occasional premium ball (Pro V1, Srixon Z Star etc) do seem to carry 10 to 15 yards further...but that is based on my questionable ability with the sticks .
