Played this morning and it was pretty windy down here in Suffolk. Well, windier than usual anyway, probably nothing compared to what some of you on here play in

Anyway, I found myself having great difficulty when hitting shots into the wind - lack of distance, especially with woods and to some extent my hybrid, and real trouble hitting fairways in crosswinds. Felt I might be better off with a 3 iron off the tee in a lot of cases as I can't seem to hit a low shot with my hybrid or 5 wood, but I didn't have one with me.

Any suggestions on how to hit a low(er) shot with a hybrid, or do you just accept the windy conditions and aim accordingly? I found it very difficult to aim at trees off the fairway and trust that the wind will bring the ball back round :(

personaly i would say just play with the conditions you've got theres nothing you can do really, and thats what makes golf differenet compaired to other sports. obviously you can club up and club down depending on the wind direction and speed but other than that i wouldnt worry about it just enjoy the time spent on the course.

have recently switched my long irons out for hybrids, wouldve loved to have my 2/3 iron out there today, still not sure the composition of my bag is right

You just have to accept the conditions are the same for everyone and work out the best way to deal with them. I'm sure the Scottish folk on here will tell you all about the low knock down punch shot that is a staple part of their armoury. Personally and not being as talented, I just work out how many club difference the wind is, take more stick and try and swing smoothly. A hard thrash is going to put more spin on it and so it'll go higher.

Played last night in at least a 4 club wind. Normal 7 iron only went 100 yards.

Take more club ball back in stance a bit more and swing easy.

When I play at Tain which tends to be windy anyway always have a 3 iron and my 17deg hybrid or 2 iron in the bag.

On parkland take them out and have an extra wedge.

You should take your 3 iron along with you and then decide which club to take onto the course just before you play, once youve seen the conditions.

I keep my 3-wood, 2-iron and gap-wedge in my bag amd just take them out before I play. That way I can swap them in for my hybrids or sand wedge or whatever if its windy or just choose whatever combination I reckon the conditions call for.

For keeping the ball low in the wind I think the only solution unfortunately is to practice the knock down and punch shots and all at the range!

I'm not really a technique guy so my advice is probably completely useless but what I do if I want to hit a knock down type shot is grip down a bit on the club, put the ball slightly back in the stance, aim slightly left, swing a bit slower with a shorter back swing and a low follow through. Swinging slower amd smoother is important as you put less spin on the ball. Dunno if thats sound advice but it works for me (kind of!!)

I grew up playing in the wind and one thing I did learn (eventually!) is that youve gotta learn not to try and fight it and instead just accept it and use it.... The wind cant be beaten! Instead of adding one club and swinging hard, add 2 or 3 and swing easy. You cant make the wind your mistress but you can make it your friend!
