As I have absolutely no feel for shafts, im after some advice. Specifically between a stiff 60g and a reg 50g both in fujikura pro

Is it just about swing speed? I think I have light reg (ns pro 950) in the irons, cos I hit them pretty low,p. but 57 stiff in the mini, which can go like a rocket

+1 for getting fit. I didn't agree with it for shafts either, bought stock drivers, actually got fit by a local pro and the difference was unreal. Definitely worth it!

I Bought a Ping G30 for £110 with a reg shaft and it worked well for me. One Saturday morning i had a smack with another guys ping driver but it was fitted with a tour shaft. It was fantastic. So I bought one off eBay.

But was it luck or what, anyway I went to Ping HQ for a fitting for some irons, I was then checked with my driver for both shafts. The tour shaft came out on top by 10-15 yd with a better dispersion. More importantly the driver was not set at the maximum loft which is what I had it previously set to.

get fitted for your driver/shaft. 👍

I've been looking a fair bit into shafts and trying to find a pro who will not just try and punt you stuff has been a bit of a pain... I've managed to find one with gc2 who has 5 stiff and 4 regular to try my 915 tomorrow and compare with my blue diamana.

Yes light should give more SS but are you going to lose control if it's too flexible? Are you gonna get a ton of spin? There's loads of stuff on mygolfspy if you search. Kickpoints, torque, trajectory etc.

I'm going to try and get my spin down... which I know is down to technique more than anything but I think every little helps. If I lose 2-3mph SS but get a lot lower spin it should be worth it but will be discussing all this with the pro.... if none are better or only marginally and not worth it I'll just pay for the time on gc2

Normally id go get fitted. But im ordering a driver online and theyre the only 2 options. Just intererested in the characteristics really. Good points v bad points

I prob shouldve mention this...

The saving on ordering a driver online without trying could cost you pounds and shots in the long term,

50 is on the very light end of a driver shaft. Do you have a very smooth swing? You could start to lose the head a bit if you yank at it. Not too many people fit well into a 50 driver shaft. Its not really about swing speed, more about tempo. That said you might fit an older player or lady with a 50 to try and gain SS or up launch a bit.

I'm just back from a shaft fitting and was a bit of a revelation- they had 9 shafts in stock with my titleist adapter. After checking my SS he discounted 4 of those immediately then 1 of them was the same as my current so that left 4.

With my current blue diamana I was spinning the ball way to high- up between 3700 and 4000. I tried the new Fukirkura TS 74 that's in the 917 as thought this would be a good starting point but felt absolutely dead in my hands- like a lead pipe.

After trying the other 3 I narrowed it down to 2 stiff shafts- Aldila Rogue max 65 and the black diamana 70.... I was probably splitting hairs with the 2 but I had a bit better dispersion and more penetrating flight with the black diamana so went for that. I was gaining and extra 24 yards carry with the black diamana and spin was down at between 2200 - 2600 depending on strike... even total mi***** we were discounting were spinning at 3300-3500 which was still far less than my current shaft.

From the pro was also a lesson really as worked a bit on my swing. Said swing path good, face control ok on occasions but needs work but my biggest downfall is strike- i'm still striking out the heel too much so is something I need to work on as it is due to slight casting motion- said it really is only fractional though.

So in response to Dave- I think you'd be crazy to buy online without the knowledge of what suits best- this is coming from serial club changer.

Find a good pro with a good LM and get testing it would probably open your eyes like it did mine.

The pro I went to obviously had a limited shaft selection but even at that I now know I have a more suited shaft... I do wish I had a golf principles type place right enough where I could try a zillion shafts but with some shafts almost the same price as a new driver maybe not lol.

I'd get some guidance from a fitter, based on what you are after from your driver - distance, flight, dispersion etc.

50g is so light most people do not like the feel

I would confirm that for certain.

Recently tried all these clubs (sorry we play around a lot whilst playing a friendly game with the family):-

Adams 60g reg driver normally the flight is a really high spinny right shot or can be any shot, just never know when I go to hit his and can feel the club in the main, just a bit flexy.

Wifes 50g ladies flex driver(set at 13.5), I cant feel the shaft or head at all and it feels like Mr Whippys come to town, but normally the flight is good(don't ask me, that's the results I get, I actually really like this driver).

Cobra fly z+ stiff 65g shaft, can feel the club but doesn't actually feel that stiff, flight is normally okay

M2HL 60g stiff shaft, the club/shaft feels lighter when compared to the fly z+, even before swinging but the shaft feels lovely and firm to swing so do not feel any problem with it 'feeling lighter'

The bottom line is I would imagine you will feel a lot of difference between a 50g regular and 60g stiff shaft flex, but a lot will come down to how you swing the club and what you like to feel.

I suppose it comes down to whether the extra cost you are really going to see the added benefits of the custom fit shafts and surely the spin rates would have to be WAY different to make a noteable difference to the average golfer?

Where did you have this? i really fancy doing this but unsure how much shafts will cost

I take it you were meaning this for me?

I had mine done at Affordable golf in Glasgow but Tour X I believe is close to you- yeah the cost of shaft is something you would seriously need to consider- for my shaft (which is a standard stock shaft btw) it was £100 so probably a bit more expensive than it's worth but for that I got the pro giving a mini lesson, use of GC2 LM and testing of several shafts.

there were 2 reasons I done it this way- I felt the shaft wasn't suitable so wanted to test against others, and I've got a kid on the way so I couldn't justify a £400+ outlay on a new driver when mines is probably fine.

A couple of questions that might help...

How far do you hit with your current Driver? What shaft is in it? Are you happy with the (lack of) feel?

Is the flight particularly high or low? Which?

Are you generally straight or a bit wayward? Is the 'miss' consistent or 'random'?

do you feel you swing smoothly? Or a bit 'snatchy' - particular in transition from backswing to downswing?

Thanks mate I've got a m2 but with a project x in as I bought from eBay pretty sure a driving shaft fitting will add more yards to my game and tigten dispersion.

thanks again
