Deceleration through the ball

Played today after a couple of weeks without a golf club in my hand (work commitments!) Sun was shining and the golf clubs were clean!

One thing I did find is that when I came within the green, anything from 80 yards away - right up to a couple of foot off the green...I decelerated! This caused me a few shots by hitting them straight into the bank, or not even reaching the green!

I think its because I have a fear of the ball flying over the other side of the green and putting myself in a worse position than before (especially small chips around the green) Has anyone else had this problem? If so what training did they do, or any drills they could suggest? Failing that, does anyone have a magic potion I could buy off them? I have a bit of money saved away!:)

I find it on little ones round the green. I play off 12, just feel a few little chips that I could master I could get down to the single figures!

Just noticed you play the Odyssey Tour Series putter. I'm in the market for a new one, what does that feel like? Do you prefer milled or insert putter?

If your backswing is long for a short shot, you will probably decelerate.
Try a shorter backswing.
Or........
Address the ball and hit it out of the toe.
That will get the ball coming off the club face dead

easy fix for that. a 56 degree wedge. a little chipping motion with that wont fly any green.

do you use your 58 much?

Seriously, I would not recommend you do this around the green if you are having problems. Unless you have a hazard to go over you should be looking to keep it as simple as possible. Less loft = more success. Use a 7,8 or 9 iron to get the ball running along the ground rather than trying to throw the ball up in the air.

i get the feeling he plays on raised greens

i get your point though about telling someone whos having trouble chipping to use a high enough lofted club. if you set up right then its really not that difficult.

weight left, hands forward, strike down and follow through.

This is my biggest fault when it comes to bunkers and those tricky little pop up shots we sometimes need! That and lifting my head and thinning it through the green anyway lol. They are getting fewer but the thought still lurks in the back of the mind.

Fantastic thanks for all the help. Off to play today so I will make sure I use a shorter back swing and really focus on acceleration!

Are you me...?

Like the OP, my fear is hitting the too far, so I do 2 things.

1) slow down into the ball
2) look up before I've hit the ball to see whether or not I've hit it too far

Combined, these things turn into duffed chips. It doesn't make any sense to do this, because the result is always worse than it would be if you hit the shot a little bit too far.

When I concentrate on staying down and accelerating, I can play the shot fine, which tells me it's all in my head. Just need to spend some time practising.
