I played at Murrayshall today - played rubbish so there may be some sour grapes in this post.

9th hole - par 5 - proper 90 degree dog leg. However you're not allowed to cut the corner as that means playing over the 10th green. So you need to hit something like a seven iron off the tee into a small landing area with a burn if you go too long then fairway wood and wedge to reach the green; pretty annoying.

What other daft holes are out there?

any blind par 3......

having looked at the hole we have one almost identical in layout but 173 yards longer off the whites, mainly added to the first 'leg'. The ladies have been moving their tee forward and left over the years so that they can play a 7 iron from the tee !!! It looks like one of those where the ladies tee doesn't work where it's positioned - or, put another way, the difference between a lower handicap lady and higher one comes into play but the set up doesn't nable you to take any benefit from it.

ours also has water on the inside and outside at the dogleg, and 2 huge oaks as well as a small forest on the inside too :)

btw they can't rule that you don't play over the corner if you wish too - but they can make the consequences of failure very extreme :(

theres a hole at strabane in which the fairway is on such a side slope where over 90% of drives roll down the bottom and into the rough. ive bet people fivers that they wont hold the fairway! its the lay of the land so not much can be done about it!

True - they had a sign saying "please" don't play over the 10th green for safety reasons. Ignoring that it would have been a simple matter to fire a driver over the corner and onto the fairway.

The ladies tee actually has a better angle than the mens. I was able to bite a bit off the corner with a 3 wood without threatening the 10th green but it was a much trickier shot.... I airmailed the fairway completely (played for fade but nailed it straight) but luckily bounced back into play off a tree!

Like wise with Jedburgh GC, took me blinking ages to get up to the green.

Also the 14th at Three Rivers GC in Maldon. It's called "Cardiac Hill" par 5 483 yards but a monster of a hill, even worse if you play with a fade, you're constantly walking up the fecking thing.

The 18th at Davthulme has a massive tree right in the middle of the fairway, there is room both left and right but a drive into the middle of the fairway must leave an awkward shot.

Smiffy has a few like this at his course...... :(

Really like that hole, makes you think!
What did you think of the course? I played it on Monday, also played it about 2 months ago....very much improved in that time, also played The Lynedoch on Sunday, brilliant course imo. Thought both were in immaculate condition.

Interesting course - you really need to think about most of the tee shots and pick your way round - I didn't hit driver much.... but probably more than I should have! Local knowledge invaluable, sadly I didn't have any so quite a few shots I'd play differently if I was back on the course tomorrow.

I didn't like the greens due mainly to their inconsistent pace.... I wasn't counting putts, fortunately, but I wouldn't be surprised if I took > 40. :ooo:

That said, I enjoyed it and would definitely play there again.

Yip agree on the greens, very hard to read and very unpredictable. The greens on the two course courses are completely different as well, pitch on the Lynedoch and they almost stop dead, on the Murrayshall they run through a lot. Think I was around 40+putts, could have knocked about 10 shots off my round.

If you go back play the Lynedoch, cracking course but probably need a buggy, quite hilly!

We got an overnight, BnB plus 2 rounds for £79...excellent deal!

15th at Dunmurry in Belfast is a 80 degree right dogleg with high trees down the right and greenkeepers sheds, too tight to slice round and bushed at 200 yards dead ahead, 7 iron to the corner and 5w-7iron to green depending on wind, only daft hole on an otherwise nice course.

I can't remember the hole number, but a par 5 at The Addington where anything over about 180yds off the tee takes a gamble of finishing in one of a few patches of heather in the middle of the fairway that you can't see from the tee.

Hindhead has a daft par 3. You have to struggle up cardiac hill, and when you get to the top you have to hit a wedge all the way down to the bottom of the hill. Good tip is not to have the honour, so you get more recovery time.;)

Hmmm. The Lynedoch is quite possibly the most stupid course ever designed. Hilly ain't the word. There's a par 3 of about 90 yards which is only 30 yards in front of you - but another 60 yards up. (I exaggerate - but not by much!) And a par 4 with the green practically directly below your feet. Played it once which is two times too many. Only saving grace it that you get nice views of the Perthshire hills.

I played the very short Tunbridge Wells golf Club on a society day a couple of weeks back and was perplexed by the "junction" box of shared fairways where two different groups ended up playing blind shots into the same area of the course (5th and 8th) at the same while the a third group stood on another (2nd) tee only a few yards away and well within range from both of the other tees.

Thinking back the 9th was also a 190 yard blind shot to a green with the 1st tee right next to it and again easily in reach of anything hit slightly left.

11th I think R3, trying to hit a 5iron or something to get onto that plateau that looks like a driving range.....agreed, silly hole!
