Cyber Attack on the NHS - Potential Ransom Demand

Erm - I think that you'll find that MS Windows OS is rather more critical to many major and critical government (inc defence) systems than it being a means to run MS Office...

Maybe you were joking to divert but I'm not sure.
There was a post by Doom suggesting that our Nuclear Subs were reliant on MS Windows for their systems. I was pointing out that the systems that are responsible for the missile wont be a Windows app.

They might not be an app but their systems apparently run on Windows 2000 and Windows XP

And on the blog a comment from December 2008

And what about the future when Windows 2000 and XP security is no longer supported? (Which by the look of it is right around the bend)

How much will it cost to upgrade the system then?

Many military systems around the world work on a windows OS system - the Typhoon at one stage had Windows NT OS. Have worked on a number of IT systems within the military that used Windows , or Unix plus various DB

I worked for BAE Guided Weapons (Dynamics) and I assure the systems responsible for Missile Guidance did not operate on a Windows platform.

Well that was an interesting day. No phone systems to book patient procedures (but could make normal in/out calls..go figure) and email still down but other than that we were pretty much business as usual

So running the subs used/uses a modified version of Windows XP.

Indeed, it's highly unlikely that there's be anything like a Windows OS/Platform involved with the actual guidance of missiles! There is just NO REASON to involve a Windows type OS! Self Destruct commands notwithstanding, missile guidance is a 'single task', albeit multi-thread application - little different different to the likes of cruise control, or GPS, in a car!

And I know that - as I worked for BAe Guided Weapons (Dynamics) and actually designed missile guidance, control and navigation systems. That said. I wrote the code in Ada...and haven't a clue what the operating system was.
