.....From Mr. Harvey Penick.

Just reading his littele 'green' book and he makes a comment on custom fitting. Shaft flex is obvious but lie angles are interesting.
All custom fitting takes place off a flat and regular lie, where the impact is repeatable. How often does this occur on the course? Uphill, downhill, above feet, below feet lies all the time. How can lie angles be that important when the ground is so variable?

Very interesting and as always with Mr. Penick based in common sense.

Suggestion appears that it's all in the 'head' and if this gives confidence fair enough.

Thoughts - comments???

(arguments, slanging matches, aggressive posts welcome too. always revealing about the poster :D)

I know what he means - how many times have you tried a club on a range only to find that out on the course it goes sideways?
Not saying custom fitting is a bad thing but it isn;t everything.
After all you can be fitted by the best fitter in the world and you can still hit it sh1te!!!!

Being 6ft 4 "custom" clubs are a bit of a must for me. I went for a custom fitting last weekend (which took 2 hours), as it was free and I'm not paying anymore for these clubs than I would have done for standard ones I think it was well worth it. The upshot was I walked away with a completely different set of clubs (Cleveland CG Red Irons Tour Spec)than I had looked at prior to the fitting. The clubs will be lengthened, the lie angle adjusted and the grips changed by Cleveland. Whether they will make any difference to my game we'll just have to wait and see!

Probably not, but you will have the inner satisfaction of knowing they are right for you. This is a nice feeling, all warm and cosy. It will also screw their resale value.
