Hi guys,
a little while ago I had a 'custom fitting' by Taylor Made when they were having a demo day at a local course. I was only interested in irons & ended up being recommended with R11's with regular steel shafts, no problem with that at all. Now, I have a couple of questions that I didn't ask Mr. Taylor Made, that hopefully you golf scientists can answer.
1. Does it follow that if I need regular steel in my irons, then, I would suit regular graphite in my hybrids & woods?
2. Does a golfers' swing speed increase when using woods or is it fairly similar throughout the bag when taking a full shot?
I hope I'm not asking anything too complicated so soon after New Year's Eve!
All the best & season's greetings to you all,

Slime.

1. Nope. It all varies on how you swing each club. You could be smooth with your iron but go after your woods a little more.
2. Your Swing speed tends to increase with longer clubs.

No it doesn't mean that you'll be regular throughout the bag!

Hi - the experts will be along soon, but here's a starter

At fitting the fitter will work out your optimum shaft based on a variet of clubs - driver, 6 iron, 9 iron - or somthing similar.

Bacause the shaft length decreases from driver to 9 iron, then for the same angular rotation, teh actual speed of the clubhead also decreases, so in fact the different clubs swung with the same effort generate progressively slower clubehead speed (and hence initial ball speed).

Can't answer Q1 however

When you say a fitting at a demo day are you talking about a proper fitting including loft, lie and analysis on Trackman or just given a few clubs to try in different specs and hit a few balls in a bay. I've been to numerous demo days (I'm a real glutton for trying the new gear) and most tend to be a case of just hitting the various models and then perhaps a chat about specs. Sometimes you can book a 10-15 slot to use the launc monitor which gives a lot more feedback and starts to get into the realm of a proper fitting but few bother with impact baords, measurements etc

The majority of woods are graphite now. There is no uniformity and the TM standard regular does tend to be a little whipy in their woods compared to say a Ping or Nike. Woods are different beasts and I'd recommend trying a few driverss and fairways and seeing what works for you

I agree with the guys offerings on this one. You should get custom fit for each area of your golf bag. Woods, Irons, Wedges and Putter should all be looked at individually. Good luck with it all.

On the day I tried 3 or 4 different 6 irons.I then selected the one I liked the look & feel of & then the TM man fitted it with different lengthed shafts, graphite & steel. Once I'd settled on a shaft length we then tried different stiffnesses until one stood out. Finally he put tape on the bottom of the club & got me hitting balls off a special board. He then adjusted the lie angle until he was happy with what he saw. Turns out that I need regular steel shafts, up to 3/4" longer than standard & 2* upright, and boy, it did make a difference.
Unfortunately there wasn't time to mess around with woods as we ran out of time!
I was with him for quite a while & there was a bit of a queue forming!
Yhanks for your help,

Slime.
