Apologies everybody, been a while since I've logged in and posted but read most days.I'm going for my 1st ever custom fit next week and feeling slightly apprehensive that it will turn in to a lesson in that I'm going to be pigeon holed into something I'm not.I want to be convinced that I will be fitted for my swing, my address, my body and not that of a pro's standard thought process.Ive been to DG and AG just to see what new stuff to gauge price etc and hit a couple of balls and both times the staff said "do this" "do that" so hopefully you can see my dilemmaI have heard good things from one or two people about the pro who will fit me so fingers crossed

When I was fitted for the irons the other week, he just left me with the 3 sets I wanted to hit (just 6 irons)

When he came back it was pretty obvious to both of us which suited best. So we went on with them, tried different shafts, lie board etc. All pretty standard stuff and the process was much easier than I'd thought.

There wasnt much coaching going on. Just one little tip.

Best thing is to be open minded to different clubs, and just try and enjoy it

I think it depends where you are going. If you are going somewhere like a pro or a specialised fitting centre the fitter should work around what you have and advise on your swing as you present it. The issue I have with DG or AG is they will try and change things to manipulate you into a certain fit

I agree with Homer. AG are there to sell you the stuff they have on the best margins or for which they are incenticised to sell. A former store manger told me some if the tactics they used. That doesn't mean that the odd one here and there takes it more seriously I doubt you would often have the experience I had at Precision, being told a different shaft in my current irons might technically improve performance but that it wasn't worth doing.

Just pointing out, for the benefit of the new lad, that they're not all the same.

Hour at AG. 6 or 7 different irons. Loads of different shafts. Ĺoft, lie, grip etc...

Balls on a range, nothe simulated, backed up by full stats off a launch monitor.

Stats for each try out patiently explained.

To the OP. Go where you feel most comfortable and enjoy, like Davie Laa said. If it feels dodgy or uncomfortable, you're free to walk.

I understand what you mean but as an example if you went for a custom fit for a driver and the guy fitting you notices you hit down rather than up because the ball position is too far back. And he gives you a tip that improves your ball position before fitting surely that's a good thing?

A good fitter will fit clubs to the swing you turn up with, unless you've got a glaring fault. That said, you're the one spending a lot of money. Explain your thoughts to him/her.

Wasting your time mate AG are the Devil incarnate to Ethan and Homer.😃

Wrong. They are a shop which sells stuff and uses fitting to steer buyers to more profitable kit. I know for a fact they sometimes manipulate the LM settings to assist this objective.

Prove it if you know for a fact as everytime they're mentioned you immediately post to put people off.
They're no more than another tool in the box for people to make up their own mind, you are consumed with negativity towards them and being unhelpful towards other posters.
So if you have such proof please enlighten the forum or are you afraid AG may see it. i'm sure they'd like the opportunity to defend themselves.

Not in my experience. Therefore your blanket statement is not correct.

Maybe be positive?
Maybe provide supportive advice that enables the OP to enjoy his experience?
Maybe not try to be the section of the forum that p1sses on people's bonfire when they're looking forward to buying new gear?

Are you their lawyer or just having a go.

I have discussed this with a former AG store manager and one of the staff admitted it to me when my 100 mph swing appeared to carry the ball 270 and I called him on it. I have also seen some fits where someone off the street could have done better, hard swinging players fitted into an A flex shaft, for example, despite having told the so called fitter he played Rifle 6.5 in his irons and hit them well.

AG is not a custom fit operation. It is there to shift product. That is fine if you know what you want or are buying clothes or shoes. If you have a particular reason for your impassioned but poorly informed defence, please let us know.

Feel free to use these 'facts' you are so keen on to contradict me.

So hearsay and guess work from a former employee.
I have no issue with any shop as it's not a one size fits all and no affinity to AG or DG, it's like huds1475 said your experience isn't everyones, but you make sure you try and put people off using AG, it serves purpose and a gap in the market. not everyone needs custom fit or have the time and money to get one.
However, if you do want a custom fit etc AG can help point or facilitate the fitting.

I've used AG at the Trafford Centre for a custom fit. Everything about it was above board. Had my own driver with me, and saw numbers I'd expect to see. The fitter was knowledgeable but by no means pushy on any product. Equally, I've been to another AG, and wouldn't go back.

Twice been for a fit with TM, and wouldn't go back to them, although I have been fitted by an independent and ended up with a TM product.

There's good and bad with each. Go with the right mindset, and take your own gear too, to make a decent comparison.

Three shops, three horrendous fittings. Enough proof for me. Given that the clubs I got fitted for by an independent fitter had me as green dot (2.25 upright) one store had me as 3 degrees flat from a static fit alone. One offered me nothing more than the club in a R and S flex

Horrendous fitting so you went back twice more?

Well strangely enough at the time I was prepared to put it down as a one off, hence going to a different store. Don't let that stop you mocking though
I won't, even after 2 you went for a third
