Back on the custom fit thread I'm afraid.

Went to McClelland golf at Silvermere yesterday to have a look at a Cobra L4V on their flight scope monitor. Hit about 10 balls with my D1 to get a view of what I get now. 14° launch, 90 mph swing speed, 200 yard carry, 2500rpm back spin.

Tried the Cobra F, stiff shaft, 10°. Lovely high ball flight, looked like it went miles. Result, 4000rpm back spin, 205 yard carry, no roll. Useless.

Then tried 2 different shafts in a superquad head (supposedly low spin). Both of these again looked like they went miles with a lovely flight, but the figurers on the monitor don't lie, and they would roll out shorter than my D1.

The fitter was an honest guy, and reckoned he would struggle to fine a better fit for me than my current D1 (which was not custom fit, although I have a non standard shaft in it).

So apart from discovering I hit it like a little girl, I have now learned that it is impossible to just pick up a driver 'off the shelf' based on 'well, I need a stiff shaft, and about 9° loft, and that one looks shiny', as even if you like the way you hit it, it could be shorter than your 3 wood.

I thoroughly reccommend McClelland golf, and it was an enlightening experience for me. £40 was a small price to pay, compared to getting a driver that is wrong.

Best bit is I get to keep my D1, knowing it is perfect for me.

Bet you were sweating a bit waiting to hear if your Titleist was all wrong for you?
The confidence factor on the tee will be higher now for you, this psychological advantage should help you hit more fairways. If you do put a bad swing on it at least you know it isn't the club's fault and go rushing off to Ebay/Golfbidder like I do...frequently!

Birdieman - this is exactly why I wanted to go and get measured. Can't wait to hit the course now, with only me in the way of a good strike!

Could not agree more with the benefits of having a driver fitted. A higher loft and a slightly shorter shaft have turned my driving from an embarrassment to one of the better aspects of my game.

Dont look past the fact that there is high street "custom fit" at AG or other high street retailers, where some spotty kid tapes up some drivers and tells you a bit about each model - then you go for whichever one you hit best on the day.

Then there is proper custom fit that measures launch angle , ball speed, carry distance etc.

Believe me, make sure you get fit properly - I was suckered into a set of irons and a driver when the first one when I took the game up.

we should put up what what proper fitting shop's we know in our own area, so any golfer looking to get fitted can look up the thread and see if there area has been covered.

the only one i know in my area is the mizuno factory in cumbernauld, all you need to do is get a shop to make a appointment for you but they only do mizuno clubs. I would be interested to know of any other fitters with the proper gear in the glasgow area.

good luck with the new found knowledge/confidence murph

WELL DONE. More proof that Custom fitting IS NOT 'HYPE' as one once put it!

I take it you are referring to me?

I'm 5'9" tall (or short), average length arms and average size hands, hit a good drive 270+, handicap 5 - do I need fitted?? Still to be convinced.

Yes it was actually not being funny tho mate. Your lucky you got a good handicap you never know you might be scratch if you get custom fitted. Like i said before its not a gimmick Manufacturers spend shed loads on research and stuff for custom fitting and works for many many people including pros. Its Mathematically and scientifically proven.
Custom fitting includes shafts/grips/lie/andgles/bounce etc please do give it a chance!

To be honest its just something i strongly believe in.

it might be standard is the right fit for you or you could shave shots of your game by being custom fit, im afraid there is only one way to find out i suppose but it does cost cash to find out though

90 mph, 14* launch....sounds identical to me!

200 yrd carry is ok, not too girly i.m.o. in reality, you'll squeeze some long drives out of this.

What loft was the titleist?

I want to support my local pro but with no launch monitor etc just how good would their fitting be?

They don't charge for fitting either.
IF you got access to a range the pro can tell from consistent ball flights and from a lie board what equipment will be right for you! You dont always need computer stuff but it does come in handy.
The Bad thing about computer Stuff is Muppets at American golf who know next to nothing about Fitting can learn to use a launch monitor and bodge you a bit of kit, take them to the range and they will coil up like a hedge hog!

Hi Dave,

My Titleist is a 9.5 degree, with a harmon tour design gxr shaft, stepped 'two points less than stiff'. Sounds custom fit, but a mate who does this sort of thing put it in for me, because he thought it would suit me. Turns out he was right.
