Back on the custom fit thread I'm afraid.
Went to McClelland golf at Silvermere yesterday to have a look at a Cobra L4V on their flight scope monitor. Hit about 10 balls with my D1 to get a view of what I get now. 14° launch, 90 mph swing speed, 200 yard carry, 2500rpm back spin.
Tried the Cobra F, stiff shaft, 10°. Lovely high ball flight, looked like it went miles. Result, 4000rpm back spin, 205 yard carry, no roll. Useless.
Then tried 2 different shafts in a superquad head (supposedly low spin). Both of these again looked like they went miles with a lovely flight, but the figurers on the monitor don't lie, and they would roll out shorter than my D1.
The fitter was an honest guy, and reckoned he would struggle to fine a better fit for me than my current D1 (which was not custom fit, although I have a non standard shaft in it).
So apart from discovering I hit it like a little girl, I have now learned that it is impossible to just pick up a driver 'off the shelf' based on 'well, I need a stiff shaft, and about 9° loft, and that one looks shiny', as even if you like the way you hit it, it could be shorter than your 3 wood.
I thoroughly reccommend McClelland golf, and it was an enlightening experience for me. £40 was a small price to pay, compared to getting a driver that is wrong.
Best bit is I get to keep my D1, knowing it is perfect for me.
