If the CSS for a course on a particular day is 73 & par is normally 72 does that mean the results posted during the competition that day were lower than would normally be expected?

It basically means the majority of folks had a bad day so par was seen to be harder than 71.
Our place has a competition running on fridays and saturdays, par71, last friday css was 74 and saturdays was 72 which could be put down to different weather conditions.

Our place is CSS 69 against Par of 68 nearly every time.

Our Annual Pro Am was held over the last 2 days, the Pro prize being won with -2, and only 2 others breaking Par. Worst I saw was a +10 from a Pro too, so being off 12, I guess I shouldnt be too hard on myself !!

I played the other week and shot 71 (+1) and thought I was good for the buffer zone and was surprised to find CSS was 73. It was a strong wind and we had a some solid rain to start (well 4 holes for us) but I didn't think conditions were that tough. Considering I had an 8 on the par 5 2nd too it just shows that you need to battle on as there is always a chance what you think will be the buffer may in fac result in a cut.

Almost always from the front tees our CSS is 2 under 67(junior/juvenile comps) and one under 70 from the medal tee. Hpwever I have seen it being 69 from the backa few times!!

Its gutting that playin off 6 I have to shoot 3 under my handicap at times to get .2!!!!!

Our standard scratch is usually up at 76/77 and have, on occasions, seen it at 78.
This means that you don't have to break 80 to maintain a CAT 1 handicap!
I always have to remind myself that although my handicap is 10, I probably have 15 strokes to play with in reality.

The best bit is when your teeing off at 7.30am its blowing a gale and raining all morning and you can't make one par to save your life you get to the club house the sun starts to come out,it now blowing a nice helpful breeze on every hole now and you meet some knob in a lovely jumper and who reeks of booze from the night before and he asks you how you got on pretending not to see the 50 layers of damp clothes you have got on, you dare not speak in case it costs you your membership.

Next day you see the results and the standard scratch is 65 and you've just had a 90 and the fella with the lovely jumper has taken first place.

I love those days :D

Just for the record, CSS has nothing to do with Par but is worked out from the SSS for the course depending on how difficult the course played that day. In other words it levels out the differing playing conditions at a particular course so that a score on a hard day is considered better then the same score on an easy day and handicaps adjusted accordingly.
The SSS is an assessment of the course itself to make the handicapping system fair across different courses. For example a difficult Par 72 course may have a SSS of 74 where an easier one may be as low as 70.
In all cases the course Par is actually irrelevant for handicapping purposes.
