Cricketers Jailed

Serves them all right , i was surprised the jury couldnt all agree on this tho , the odds of predicting the no balls by over & what ball in that over must be millions to one , even to get one right would be a miracle stroke of luck , id say (maybe incorrectly) the young boy Amir at only 19 got led by the others , be surprised if he ever plays cricket again even after the 5 year ban , def wont represent Pakistan .

Id say NOTW paper were sick they didnt get their£150k back tho ha ,

I am glad they are all behind bars and it sends a message that they wont get away with it in this country. With the thing that the whole jury couldnt agree it doesnt suprise me. Sky sports news interviewed him a while back and they said then that the way he spoke that they thought he was innocent, they said normally you could read between the lines and suspect if they are lying but they said in this instance they believed everything he said.

Its a shame amir has been caught up in this at such a young age as he sounded very proud that he represented his country and being the youngest bowler to 50 test wickets he had lots of promise, he is the only one I can see playing cricket again. Hes learnt a very harsh but fair lesson in my opinion but as they keep saying once you get involved in this its impossible to get out of due to threats to family and things and how many of us would want to put family at risk?

Its a very dark day for cricket in my opinion with this confirming that this happens and as a huge cricket fan it makes me wonder what matches I have watched have been a real match?

Well deserved, if they appeal it should be like Premiership football where they increase the ban for a frivilous appeal.

Steve Harmison needs to be investigated for all those wides he used to bowl!!! :-)

Don't see the point of jail, now living at taxpayers expense, should just ban and deport them. Seems excessive considering the light sentences you see for worse offences.

Light sentences for more heinous crimes doesn't make the cricketers sentences excessive; it means the sentences for more serious criminals are too moderate.

I think it is right that they have been jailed and hopefully it'll send a message to tother sports too. As for Amir potentially playing again in 5 years I think its wrong. Whether he was led astray or acted knowingly he cheated and I think life bans need to be put in place, not just in this case but for future reference. It's sad that he has wasted his talent but there will be other 18-19 year olds back home ready to take their chance

once a cheat always a cheat if you ask me! Ok they never cheat again but lets be honest there will always be a cloud of doubt over them. Life ban is fair and just, plenty of others waiting in the wings who would do their country proud given half the chance

Seriously ??? Jail for cheating at sport

When how many threads have we had on here about cheating and that in fact most of us dont actually "know" the rules. Cheating is rife in football and many many sports.

Who, really, has been harmed by this "cheating" - a bunch of crooked gamblers ?

i would have thought (i may well be wrong) that ANY sport that has a massive gambling culture attached to it can be doubted, and i would have thought that those gambling on those sports know that too.

I do NOT understand why this is a custodial issue. Irrespective of the fact that perhaps other sentencing shoudl be more harsh, it isn't , which means that sentencing guidelines think there has been a serious crime committed . Me personally, and i am happy to be persauded otherwise on this, i don't see what that is ???

they weren't jailed for cheating at sport, if bowling a no ball can be termed cheating then fair enough, but it is punished within the rules of the game, i.e. penalty run or runs plus the ball is bowled again.

They were jailed for the conspiracy to defraud.

Whats the difference between these players and say Dwain chambers.
The cricketers get jail sentences, because they all recieved money.
Dwain chambers and others i might add,get two year bans.Ok they didnt recieve money
for taking drugs, but if he had won a world title or an olympic medal he would have reaped the rewards.
Double standards.

All though a no ball would probably not alter the course of a test match........they recieved money for it. A popular bet in cricket is the number of runs in an over. Usually less than 3.5 or over 3.5 say i had had a bet on that over and put a tenner on it. This may seem a small thing but they took money to aid illegal betting worth millions in the subcontinent.

Cheating in cricket is not the same as in any other sport in what other game could cheating on live TV be this easy. It was picked up by the commentators because of the massive no ball ...if they had got closer to the line it would have gone unquestioned by every one and could have gone on througout the series.

There has been a suspicion of cheating before by Pakistani players and I hope these sentences will deter others thinking about cheating in the future.

I do find it ludicrous that drugs cheats can return to sport once they have done their time, for me, if you are prepared to cheat to win, or in the cricketers case, make money, then you should never play that sport again.

What the cricketers done and what Chambers done are 2 completely different things both bad but they are different. Chambers used performance enhancing drugs to help him win an event. The cricketers made sure they done an action so someone else could defraud the betting shops. They have also cheated for money and personal gain not for performance enhancing. The equivalent in golf would be to say on the 9th hole I am going to get a triple bogey so someone could go bet on it and gurantee that result.

I dont think they are allowed to enforce life bans due to e.u. rulings about stopping people from working and that applies to sport as well. There is that drugs cheat who has recently been ruled in court that he can compete at the olympics even though he got a life ban.

Amir I dont think will play for pakistan again but I am pretty sure he will get a game domestically and make a living out of the game whether it be IPL or county or state cricket, even club sides im sure would snap him up.

The sentences are long but hey do the crime do the time. I can see the point of some saying they think it ridiculous to see more serious crimes punished with less. In my eye the punishment always seems more suitable when money is involved and less than adequate when it's dealing with people lives.

Didn't Bruce Grobellar get done for match fixing?

It is fraud, so carries a jail sentence. They must have known this before participating, so I have no sympathy.
