Life is rosey...
Took 24 boys from our Society to West Malling yesterday and had a fantastic day! 2 courses and they were both immaculate – some of the best greens I have played on…they were nice and fast and had a very true roll and all putts held their line, but they also took a ball – superb. The course is very well maintained and looks absolutely stunning. The fairways were equally manicured – proper short stuff but plenty of cover – no bare lies. The club really looked after us as well. The food was superb and the service very good. All added up to a cracking day.
We took advantage of the 30 hole Society Package: 12 holes on the Spitfire, then 18 on the Hurricane. In the morning we ran a 4 club challenge – any 4 clubs, does not have to include a putter, though most did. I took a 3-wood, PW, 8-iron and 6-iron. Turned out to be a good choice for me as I was level par after 5 holes
. A lost ball on the Par 3 ninth led to a triple bogey, which was a shame, but I managed to follow it up with a bogey, par, birdie finish for a +6 total after 12 holes. The 28 points I scored also turned out to be plenty to win the trophy and the £46 swindle
In the afternoon, we had 18-hole stableford with a full set of sticks. I started off really well again, making the turn at +4 with 22 points. Then a couple of lost balls and an OOB meant a disappointing finish of +11 and only 15 points for the back 9. I finished with a total of 85 strokes, which is 15 over, a shot better than my handicap, and 37 points - what might have been! I just missed out on the AM/PM double by a point, but 1st and 2nd will do for me! I am nicely placed for the Order of Merit now and hope to continue at our next event at the end of June at Kings Hill. I will be cut from 16 to 15 for that match after yesterday, so all going in the right direction
I felt really good yesterday and but for 3 or 4 silly holes, it was some of the best golf I have ever played. Feels like I am in good shape ready for the summer…which is stark contrast to how I felt last month, when I did not feel in control of anything – a mate even asked if my arms had been put on the wrong way round! Someone said on here a few days ago that you can’t play yesterday’s round again…no, but I can’t wait to play the next one!
Golf is a fickle mistress, but at the moment, I love her!
