Can anybody recommend some courses around Edinburgh? Four of us are planning a trip next April/May and fancy staying somewhere near Edinburgh. We hope to drive up probably on Sunday then play one course a day Mon-Thurs. then heading home on the Friday. Any suggestions of a base offering resonable B&B and evening meal and easy access to the courses gratefully received. Everybody tells me that the courses are very reasonably priced north of the border, is that right?

Is it edinburgh centre you want or the east lothian coast. There next to each other, but if you want links golf (and some inland) then east lothian is heaven.

DCB is probably your man for the edinburgh stuff. For east lothian I could try and arrange something for you guys as I know a few peeps in this area.

Oh, there is a travel lodge just up the road and I could get 4 courses within about about 30 mins of each other.

What type of courses are you looking for ? depending upon where you stay in or around Edinburgh you are less than half an hour away from 20-30 courses.

A lot would depend upon your budget and whether you fancy links or parkland.

As Tommo says, Travel Lodge have a couple of motels on and around the City Bypass which would be convenient for hitting the road in the mornings. Probably more cost effective than some of the B&Bs in Edin as it is a tourist magnet for most of the year nowadays and the prices may reflect that.

Give us some mre details and I'm sure the boys up here can give you some ideas.

:D

Yeah CVG,

If you want to stay in the Travelodge there are about 9 in Edinburgh at the moment and they do pretty much the best rates in town although you pay extra for breakast, I believe.

For golf courses you're spoilt for choice, especially of you choose east lothian. Check out his website;-

If I were to play 4 courses I'd do;-

North Berwick West Links
Glen Golf Club
Craigielaw
Kilspindie

You'd enjoy all four I'm pretty sure. All different in terms of length and challenge.

As said in previous posts, there are plenty good courses around Auld Reekie. At that time of the year I would stick to the couses nearer the coast unless there weather has been kind, as the inland courses can tend to be a bit "heavy" at that time of the year. I certainly wouldn't discount The Kingdom of Fife while you are up this way. There are some fantastic courses within a 45 minuite drive of Edinburgh.
South of the Forth I would also recommend Gullane, Longniddry, Mortonhall, The Braids, Kingsacre, Dalmahoy, Ratho Park, Deer Park and Harburn.
North of the Bridge, any of the links courses from Aberdour to St Andrews, including Elie, Crail and if you can justify the cost I would certainly say Kingsbarns.

Thanks everybody, much to think about.

I may well take up the chance to pick your brains further, I'll talk to the rest of the group and get back to you.

Thanks again

John John John, how can you leave out Gullane or Dunbar.... :)

A day out a Gullane, playing Gullane No2 & No3 on a day ticket is still very good value for money. You will have a good test of golf over No2 and No3 although much shorter isn't a push over at all. You need to hit the right shots to score well there. Excellent views all round the course.

If you're in Edinburgh itself, try Braids No1. It's a municiple and very good value for money and in very good nick at the moment. Great views over the city from there.

Why not look at Goswick, just short of Berwick, on the way up if you're coming up the A1. Not a bad course at all.

The Glen is not too bad and North Berwick is something you have to play before you shuffle off this mortal coil !

Good point about Dunbar. Can take or leave any of the 3 Gullane courses to be honest. There are better around. Maybe I've just played them too often. Wouldn't make a special trip to play them.

Yeah, Gullane 2 is my favourite of the 3. Had a 43 pointer there a couple of months ago so it holds good memories. Good course, no doubt, but I just think Kilspindie is a bit better for variety and views if you're limited to playing 4 in the area.

We've forgotten Muirfield, Archerfield and the Renaissance of course. Are they better than Gullane?

;) ;) ;)
