Countback?

I hope this is not a silly question, but 'What is Countback?
Is it simply readding up the scorecards, to verify any errors, or is it something more sophisticated?

Countback is usually used if there is a tie. It normally starts with the best scor eover tha back nine and if still tied, works down from the last 6 holes, then the last 3, 2 and 1 if it is really that tight
