council elections

Obviously, the authorities down under have nothing better to do with their time than fine people for not voting for nobody

The Goverment at the time, John Howards party I think it was brought it in as the poor turnouts in some area were making the elections a farce in some area's. If you imagine how vast the land of Oz is some communities only have a few hundread people living in them and I know in one area only 20 something people voted and inevitably there was no winner so they had to have a revote and the same happened again. So in the end the winner was elected by the toss of a coin!!! Only know as our next door neighbours have friends out in Australia and they told us the tale to our amusement. So it is not a case of people with nothing better to do. Hey presto now the fine system is in place the turnout is over 99%. Personally I think you should vote as at the end of the day somebody has to run the country/local councils etc even if they do it badly.

I think there is a distinction (to a degree) between grass roots local elections and general elections although it can make a huge difference as to who gets in. Bracknell has been trying to get a massive regeneration project through for decades but labour councils in Reading have always been opposed as it would take trade away from them (Oracle Shopping etc). Its gone to review after review but Bracknell needs something to happen. Its a town dying on its knees and is coming close to resembling my former home town of Morden (bottom of the northern line) as THE worse town centre ever.

As regards the general election I am thinking about my vote and whether I'll take it up. The lack of action from ym MP regarding the Chris Tappin issue (no reply to date) and the whole lack of cerdibilty and meaningful policies by all the main protaginists mean that whoever gets in we will be in for four years of the same old same old

People should vote, it's lazy not to bother and allows candidates to be elected who have little popular support. It is also better that people can register their lack of confidence in the candidates by being given an option on the ballot to show it. This allows the politicians to understand how many people are not in favor of their policies.
