Costa Rica Vs England , your Team selection

So does that excuse the CB's of any blame then ?

Does it mean that we can just get rid of CB's if we have a holding player in front because he is going to stop everything ?

No but if you have a holding player in front and he's a liability he cause confusion which is exactly what happened! I can understand you sticking up for Gerrard but his days as a topflight performer are finished as hes demonstrated so ably in his last few games and indeed your crunch premiership game

Oh did he do something wrong against Italy as well ?

So one slip against Chelsea and his days as a top flight performer are over despite the other 30 odd games where he was central in Liverpool being up there with Man City !

Gerrard missed a header but performed no worse than most of the other players - there isn't many who can hold their head up - maybe Sterling , Henderson and possibly Sturridge

As someone earlier in another thread has posted - regardless of the players picked if the tactics aren't good enough then doesn't matter what players are picked. Seen calls for Lampard and talk of a Cole and Terry should have gone - havent they already disappointed at major tournaments ?

This will be prob Gerrards last game and will be great to see him go out with a win under his belt. And then the FA should remove the full coaching staff and start from scratch.

Whilst England still have a chance to qualify - their captain will still be on the pitch.

if Gerrard had got a shred of decency he's give up the captaincy and resign from International football - not only does he lose his own team the Premiership but he gets us put out of the World Cup - he cannot be relied upon under pressure and is as slow as a tug boat.
Overpaid, over-rated and over the hill, Why the witch hunt over Rooney when we've got this duffer as our Captain?

Is this called being 'wise after the event', except there's nothing 'wise' about it?

If Gerrard didn't play for Liverpool how would you rate his World Cup so far? Genuine question
Id go 5/10 at best.
& that's nothing to do with Liverpool as I think Henderson,Stirridge & Sterling have been decent.

He's slipped under the radar with all the crap being flung at Rooney, it would have been 'wise' to realise he's started making mistakes particularly in crucial games!

Agree totally with that in fact I think that Henderson could take Gerrard's position quite easily! The problem easy we don't have a world class player in the England squad so the least we can do is make sure that we've got youth with the legs and enthusiasm to try and stay with the other teams star players.

Wow, so the shift of blame has gone from Rooney to Gerrard.

Not compliment suarez for his awareness, anticipation, or Cahills poor defending at that point.

Why must we have a scapegoat? as a team we have been poor, the overall "blame" if you must falls with the gaffer for selection and tactics.

We don't want to have a scapegoat but when it's blatant that players have under performed then people bring it up.

I have nothing against Liverpool or Gerrard and I have no club bias towards any player so when I think that a player has been poor there is no hidden agenda behind it.

Can those people who support Liverpool/Man U/etc honestly say that about players for their club?

Gerard made an arse of that header, of that there is no doubt. However, any centre back worthy of the name should have been reading that situation and dropping off to cover, not pushing up directly behind Gerard.

There were 2 centre backs sitting there and not one of them had the presence of mind to drop off, that is shocking defending btw. A half decent centre back should dominate his defence and would have been barking out orders to the other one to either drop back, push up or sit (not literally). England didn't have a good enough leader in that defence to marshal them and it cost you (along with a few other things).

Gerard wasn't very good last night, but you shouldn't be blaming him for the second goal imo.

Every debate on here and you on it like a shot , your mate foxholer be along in a min , whatever we say you come up with something else , yes the gaffer should take the blame for playing these over the hill players who have only failed time and time again , and now they have failed again , if we gave the young lads a go and failed then thats ok as it will be experience for the next championship and the one after , but by playing these has beens who wont be in the next championship we have gained notink other then what we already know , worst still the young players have to wait another 4 years to play in a world cup if we make it to Russia ....................EYWC

Amen to that !

Non-English here, The worst part of England last night for me was the lack of concentration on the ball and with that there was not a shred of any worthwhile creativity, by that I mean Gerrard was trying these speculative balls that were never going to come off, so that was were the main problem was for me.

The defence was by no means great at all but with Gerrard & Henderson in front of them who were not good defensively all season for Liverpool and then on top of that Cahill and Jagielka are by no means world beaters and there's no one else around is there? Jones has not lived up to the billing he was given at the start of his career.

Then up front, Rooney was 'busy' but was he actually good? Rooney does a great job of hiding in plain sight by that I mean he looks like he's doing a lot of work but often his effort doesn't come to fruition.

Sterling was good but it was him utilising his pace that made him look better.

Again England were underwhelming, not disgraceful but just not enough

Hart
Jones
Cahill
Smalling
Shaw
Gerrard
Henderson
Lallana
Sterling
Barkley
Rooney

Rooney to play up front but letting the likes of Barkley and Lallana run off him. Basically play without a centre forward Sturridge just doesn't link up the play for me. Jones to just defend from right back, and not cross the halfway line. Shaw and Sterling to provide the pace down the left, and crosses.

No defensive duties for Barkley, just run at their defence and shoot on sight.

Henderson to play like he has so far. Intercept and lay the ball off as quickly as possible. He is the nearest we have to a natural defensive midfielder, and I think he can develop into that position. I think he is an unselfish player, happy to do the dirty work.

Hopefully we will see players linking up, and not playing as individuals. One of the reasons I like Barkley is he can play short, sharp passes, but he then never seems to get the ball played quickly back to him. He finds space, but the service is too slow. I love the way Colombia counter attack, and we have the players with pace to play like that.

Team has been announced and only two survivors from Uruguay game. Feels like a goodbye game for Lampard.

I agree. Think the captains armband is a gift and mark of respect and I fully expect Lampard and Gerrard to bow out. The side doesn't look great but good to give others a run out although I fear if Costa Rica put a strong side out we'll get turned over
