Not to take the other thread off topic I thought I'd start a new one as something Phil said got me thinking.

I hope he doesn't but I think Roy will pick on reputation instead of current form.

Who would be your starting 11 for the first game? Mine would be:

Hart
Johnson
Jagielka
Cahill
Baines

Gerrard
Henderson
Barkley

Lalana
Sterling
Sturridge

Defence appears to be our weak link

Worrying lack of choice I agree, so I would be a little controversial and go for Milner on the right of midfield.

This season he has appeared to improve massively from a creative point of view and his energy and discipline might help protect our defensive weakness on that side.

Pity we can't have this.....

Liverpools defence, any midfield and Chelseas forwards. ;)

Don't jump on me, just a Jock having a playful dig.........while knocking up the post count.:whoo:

I think the opening line up is pretty good

Would go for

Hart

Johnson
Cahill
Jagelkia
Baines

Gerrard
Barkley

Lallana
Rooney
Sterling

Sturridge

I would go with pretty much what you said, except I would have Rooney over Lalana.

I like this set up, except I would have Shaw instead of Baines.

Incidentally, do you know why, on Match of the Day, Lineker said that Barkley was unreliable?

Let's be honest - the best we can probably hope for is to make it out of the group. For that reason, with one eye on the European Championships and the next World Cup, I wouldn't take anyone over the age of 30. Just give the younger players a chance, tell them to play without any fear and expectation, and give them the experience they need going forward.

My XI would be.

Hart
Baines
Cahill
Jagielka
Walker

Gerrard
Ox
Barkley
Sterling
Rooney
Sturridge

That said I very much doubt "Dinosaur Roy" will play with more than 3 attack minded players.

I reckon smalling Jones welbeck milner and Carrick will start the 1st game.

Either way it'll be a laugh

Not a clue!

Gerrard
Henderson

Lallana
Rooney
Sterling

Sturridge

Re Linekar on barkley, he's an attacking midfielder with only 6 goals and four assists. So although looks impressive in some performances. Not enough end product to warrant a place ahead of Lallana or Sterling for me.

Fair point, I haven't seen that much of Barkley. But against Man City I thought he was out of the game a fair bit and didn't do enough, considering his youth and ability. Suppose that answers my question really, but surely it's a coaching thing, where somebody needs to talk to him and - "Coach" him!

Maybe, I think he's gonna be good. But if it was simply a case if coaching him then all players would be world class just because they were coached to score lol.

Think he he deserves a seat as I'd write this WC off. Euro qualifiers are so easy we could do it with Wellbeck leading the line (shudder). I'd like to see youth given a shot. They may lack experience, but that means their also not scarred by past failures.
