Well starting the first of my 12 hour continental shift tonight at work (7pm-7am) not looking forward to it one bit as i went out and played golf this morning and never i'm knackerd now. I'm used to nightshfts as we do 3 shifts where i work but there just 8 hour shifts and not 12hours :(

On the plus side though, i had a pretty good round at seaton carew today in cold windy conditons and after tonight i'm not back in till thursday night so got my titelist driver fitting tomorrow night and me and my friend are treating ourselves to a round at Rockliffe hall on wedensday which i'm really looking forward to.

Now where is that big flask of black coffee and bin bag full of pro plus!

I've worked 12.5 hour continentals for 24 years and I love them. I always get up early before my first night but then have a 2 hour sleep in the afternoon. Getting up early allows me to go to the gym and have 9 holes of golf before 10 AM. Doing this, I feel that the day hasn't been all "bed and work" but I also feel rfreshed and don't struggle during the night shift.
A lot of how you adapt depends on whether or not you can sleep well during the day.

All our shifts are 12.5 hrs days or nights. For the nights I aim to get up as normal on the morning, go play golf, then have a breakfast type meal at 5pm before going to work for 6.30pm. I then sleep easily the next morning and have breakfast in the afternoons after getting up. I also try to have a good meal at 11pm and a light snack at 4.30am. I have found that moving the meal times helps the body to think it is a normal day.

It also helps if you feel you benefit from the shifts and want to do nights. Personlly, I love them. The shift length gives me a lot of time off to play golf. It gave me time to go and watch my kids doing things that I would have had to book time off for. The positives outweigh the negatives. Think that, and they will be easy.

Have been doing them myself for years now 4 off 4 on which is 2 dayshifts and 2 nightshifts .We do 6 - 6 ,i'm a greedy bar steward so i do an extra dayshift as overtime.

Its has its benefits, plenty time off during the week but hardly feel i get any weekends off.The worst part is in the summer when someone's barbie is on and your going to do a saturday nightshift or your mates phone you from the pub.

For many reasons I love my 9-5, done 8 hour shifts and that did not suit me at all.

I like getting up at 6is and going to bed at 11ish every night including weekends. I always get a nice early sat and sunday tee time :)

Downside is I have to use holiday days to play during the week.

Some people can and some people cannot do shifts and nightshifts. I am firmly in the "cannot" category!

Well just got back and i don't feel too bad considering i've been awake for nearly 24 hours, worked for 12 hours doing a job that involves heavy lifting and being on my feet all the time and played a round of golf.

I think knowing i'm off now till 7pm on thursday night has helped me get through it better and the fact i'm going for a fitting for a new titleist driver tonight :)

I used to be one of them people that had a monday to friday job that only involved working from 8am - 4.30 and thought i'd never do shift work but after doing it for over a year now i don't mind it so much.

Don't think i could do continentals permanent, it's just ment to be for 8 weeks or so because they are behinde with orders so they need to catch up and build some stock up......i hope!

Used to love 12hr shifts, I worked 4 on four and we got 18 days off very 7 cycles, felt like you were never at work!

A year ago we got moved to 8 hours and I hate it. Work 7 on 2 off and get 10 days off every 3 weeks. Real killer is the quick turn around, we go from nights to afters so finish at 6am and back at work 1pm.

Get up normal time before 1st night shift and often go golfing. Get through the shift ok it's the 40 min drive home that's a struggle.
