Hi guys

wonder if any of you can help :D

my nephews netbook which runs XP was playing up a bit so i tried to run a system restore which promptly crashed. It now wont start running Windows at all. When you switch it on it comes up with a black screen with a warning message and a few options, as follows

safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration and start windows normally.

When you select any of the options it tries to start windows then flicks to a blue warning page then back to the black screen with the options again, have tried all the options and nothing works.

Its one of the wee netbook things so no disc drive.

Any of you computer genius' help with this as he cant really afford to get it fixed professionally and needs it for studying

Any help much appreciated

it sounds like a problem with the hard-drive or the motherboard mate.
last known good information was the place to start and re-set it after that would have been in safe mode, but if you have tried them all an it reverts back to the error screen i think you might have to bite the bullet and get it looked at, has your warrenty run out?

Smange, if you have the reinstall media, most netbooks don't have a CDROM so you might need to get hold of a USB CDROM to reinstall windows.

I had this on one of mine once. A downside of the ridiculous processor speeds nowadays is that you've no chance of reading the message on the blue screen unless you're a pigeon, so I video'd the screen and paused it on playback to read the message. It basically told me my hard drive was donald ducked.

Hopefully a profeshnial might be able to salvage any information you don't want to lose but it sounds like you're going to have to start afresh :(

I may have the answer.
Which netbook is it?
Not an Acer One by any chance?

I have an Acer One with the Linux. I bought it knowing that a disaster isn't necessarily a disaster. My f.i.l. has the windows xp one and it's hopeless.

I feel sorry for the poor O.Pr. Things have taken a drastically wrong turn with computers of late. Almost everything is now sold with pre-loaded operating systems and when something goes wrong you can't perform the tried and tested format and re-install.

I met someone last week with a £1.5k Sony Vaio with a failed hard drive. No repair possible without Vista DVD install disk.

Hi guys

Thanks for all the replys and ive went with the general opinion that its goosed and beyond help as far as my limited knowledge is concerned.

Have given it back to the nephew and told him to take it to a professional also advised him to be a wee bit more careful when on internet in future.

Smiffy, its a Samsung netbook but if you got some helpful hints i can pass them on

Shame it's not an "Acer One" because my wife had exactly the same problem with hers. I thought it was ready for the dustbin but carried out a search online to find out if the fault had been reported before....it had!
It turned out to be a problem with the cooling fan and simply tapping the base of the unit, where the fan is positioned, cured it completely. Something to do with all the tiny little dust particles that the machine sucks up over time making the thing overheat.
I was sceptical when I read about the cure as I was at work at the time and couldn't try it out.
But as soon as I got home I tried exactly what I was being told and bingo!! The wifes netbook has worked perfectly ever since.
You may think I'm joking but read this.....

Try it. It might cure your problem.
