Competition Handicaps

Maybe I should explain my background. I am a golf club manager at one club, and a Comps & Handicap Director at another club. As a result I regularly get in contact with England Golf.

That's fair enough. But i assume all clubs have been informed of the change and that all serious comp organisers (that aren't the Trilby Tour et al) will check the status of entrants. I really don't see how a 'c' or an 'i' can make a difference that warrants a letter but that's just me.

This is what I thought - about highlighting the exceptions.
But then I looked at HDID to see if the change had happened and noticed that, at least for surnames starting with same initial as me - B - there's more inactive than active (44 to 41). Surely that's not normal?

There are definitely more inactive members at our place with 20+ handicaps than 20- handicaps. The inactives' don't out way the actives' though.

Hmmm. Another quick count of the Bs.

Under 20hc - 29c and 16i. 20hc and over 12c and 28i .
To be expected I suppose that higher hc more likely to be inactive, but still can't get over how many overall.

To the Handicap software, that is!

Yep once the software has been updated on the handicap computer they should see the "i" disappear on the "inactive" handicaps.
If there's no "c" after the handicap it means non-competition which is essentially the same as inactive. We allow competitors with "non-competition" handicaps to enter our club comps but they are simply not allowed to win! This actually happened on Sunday just gone, its not nice having to tell someone that they won but they hadn't (if you know what I mean). Rules are rules.

I think there were two comps at our place won by guys with inactive handicaps, the one I know for sure was a mate of mine who didn't realise he was inactive until the results came out - he was a little surprised

It must be your club policy to allow inactive handicaps to win comps then? If set correctly in the handicap software it will automatically prevent any inactive handicaps from winning.

I wasn't very clear there was I? They came 1st, but weren't allowed to win, that's why my mate was surprised when he looked at the results and saw his name at the bottom with "ineligible for prize" next to it.

Sorry to change tact on this thread, but does anyone know what is the rule on going from inactive back to active? Do you have to have played 3 comps in the last year or is it 3 comps within a year from a stated date? Help appreciated.

I think its 3 qualifiers since the last H/C review ? but could be wrong

I thought once you had a handicap it was 3 cards in a calendar year, so anyone not submitting 3 qualifying/sups cards during year 1/1/13-31/12/13 is currently inactive or now non competition to be reclassed as competition you need to submit 3 cards.

The relevant date is now 1st March so players who have played in 3 qualifiers/supplementaries in the year up to 28th February will have competition handicaps.
